Bond order is a measure of the number of bonds between two atoms in a molecule. The bond order of O2 (Oxygen molecule) can be calculated using the following steps:

  1. Determine the number of electrons in the molecule: The electron configuration of Oxygen (O) is [He] 2s2 2p4. Hence, each oxygen atom has 8 electrons. So, O2 has a total of 16 electrons.
  2. Count the number of bonds between the two oxygen atoms: O2 is a diatomic molecule and contains one double bond between the two oxygen atoms. Hence, the number of bonds is 1.
  3. Divide the number of bonds by 2: The bond order of a molecule is equal to the number of bonds divided by 2.
  4. The bond order of O2 is 1/2 = 0.5.

So, the bond order of O2 is 0.5. This indicates that O2 is a paramagnetic molecule, which means it has unpaired electrons and has weak bonding between the two oxygen atoms.
