Amoeba is a single-celled organism that belongs to the kingdom Protista. It is a heterotrophic organism, which means that it obtains its energy and nutrients from other sources. Amoeba performs the process of phagocytosis, in which it surrounds and ingests their food using their pseudopodia (false feet).
Here is a description of the process of phagocytosis in amoeba:
- The amoeba extends its pseudopodia around the food particle, enclosing it in a pocket.
- The pocket of the cytoplasm then pinches off from the rest of the cell, forming a food vacuole.
- The food vacuole is surrounded by a membrane and begins to move toward the center of the cell.
- The food particle is broken down by digestive enzymes in the food vacuole.
- The resulting nutrients are absorbed into the cytoplasm of the amoeba and used to provide energy and support growth and reproduction.
- The waste products of the digestion process are eventually expelled from the cell.
This process allows amoeba to obtain energy and nutrients from other sources, allowing them to grow and reproduce in environments where food is scarce.
