How does the embryo get nourishment inside the mother's body?

Embryo develops from zygote in the female body after the fertilization of ovum (female gamete) by sperm (male gamete). The zygote undergoes cell division and forms a blastocyte. The blastocyte further divides and develops into an embryo. The embryo, with time, develops well differentiated and specialized cell types that make up tissues and organs for a fetus development.

The embryo gets nourishment inside the mother's body through the placenta.

  • The placenta is an organ that develops inside the uterus during pregnancy.
  • It is a disc shaped tissue that acts as a link between the mother's blood supply and the developing fetus.
  • The placenta is attached to the uterine wall and is connected to the fetus by the umbilical cord.
  • On the side of the embryo, the placenta comprises villi, while on the mother's side, it is surrounded by blood vessels.
  • The placenta facilitates the transfer of glucose and oxygen from the mother's blood to the developing fetus.
  • Additionally, the placenta produces several hormones that are vital for a healthy pregnancy. 
  • The umbilical cord contains blood vessels that allow nutrients and oxygen to be delivered from the mother's bloodstream to the fetus.
  • The waste products are removed from the fetal bloodstream and eliminated through the mother's excretory system.
  • These hormones include human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which is produced in the early stages of pregnancy, and progesterone and estrogen, which are produced later on.
