Kelvin and Celsius are the two commonly used scales for measuring temperatures. Kelvin scale is used by scientists and engineers, while the Celsius scale is used by over 90% of the people in the world.
- The Celsius scale defines the freezing-point temperature as 0 ∘C and the steam-point temperature as 100 ∘C.
- The Kelvin scale is the scale of temperature whose zero coincides with -273.15 ∘C.
- This scale is also known as the Absolute scale.
- To convert Kelvin to Celsius, one of the simplest methods is to subtract 273.15 from the Kelvin temperature to obtain the required Celsius temperature.

Sample Questions
Ques. Convert the triple point of water i.e. 0.01 ∘C to Kelvin. (2 Marks)
Ans. The formula of Celsius to Kelvin is given by
K = C + 273.15
We have the triple point of water in degrees Celsius, C = 0.01 ∘C
On substituting the value, we get
K = 0.01 + 273.15
⇒ K = 273.16 K
Hence, the triple point of water on the Kelvin scale is 273.16 K.
Ques. What is the Kelvin Temperature Scale? (1 Mark)
Ans. The scale of temperature whose zero coincides with -273.15 ∘C is known as the Kelvin scale or Absolute scale.
Ques. What is absolute zero on the kelvin scale? (1 Mark)
Ans. The zero of the absolute scale of temperature is denoted by 0 K and is hence known as absolute zero.
Ques. What are the uses of the Kelvin scale? (2 Marks)
Ans. The Kelvin scale is commonly used to determine color temperature, as well as in lighting. In lighting applications, Kelvin temperature refers to the color temperature that corresponds to an object's physical temperature, such as white, blue, or bright red.
Ques. Convert 900 K to Celsius. (2 Marks)
Ans. The Kelvin to Celsius formula is given by
C = K - 273.15
We have, K = 900 K
On substituting the value, we get
C = 900 - 273.15
⇒ C = 626.85 ∘C
Therefore, 700 K = 626.85 ∘C
Ques. Convert 400 K to Celsius. (2 Marks)
Ans. The Kelvin to Celsius formula is given by
