‘Monkey’ is a blanket phrase used to represent creatures that inhabit trees.

The term "arboreal" refers to creatures like monkeys that live in trees. Some of the species spend much of their time on the ground. Baboons are one such species. The monkeys are daytime animals. It denotes that they sleep at night and graze during the day.

The five families of monkeys that live in South and Central America make up the New World Monkeys. Callitrichidae, Aotidae, Cebidae, Atelidae, and Pitheciidae are the families. Primates are thought to include Old World Monkeys. Cercopithecidae is the taxonomic classification.

This family consists of 24 genera and 138 species. This family includes Macaques and Baboons.

The Old World Monkeys are referred to as Catarrhini, while the New World Monkeys are referred to as Platyrrhini. In terms of their use of innate tools and survival strategies, all of these species are regarded as intelligent. In terms of intelligence, Old World monkeys are superior to New World monkeys.

The term "monkey" is used to refer to mammals in the suborder Simiiformes. Simians is the name given to them in zoological terminology. Whereas its scientific name is Ceropothecidae.

Almost 60 million years ago, monkeys began to evolve. As a sister group to the Cercopithecidae, apes also developed. They are sometimes referred to as monkeys because of this.

The main characteristics that set monkeys apart from other primates include an external pendulous penis, the presence of pectoral nipples, and the absence of sensory whiskers.

What do Monkeys eat?

Bananas are a well-known favorite meal of monkeys, although the diets of different species vary widely based on their habitat and the food sources available.

  • Saki monkeys may eat up to 50 different fruit species in a single day.
  • The majority of monkeys are omnivores, which means they consume both meaty items like lizards and bird eggs and plant-based foods like fruits and nuts.
  • Proboscis monkeys consume more leaves from June to December and more ripe fruit from January to May.
  • Colobus monkeys consume leaves and have complicated stomachs that enable them to digest toxic foliage.

Monkey’s Social Harmony

A troop is a group of monkeys since they are sociable animals and prefer to live in communities. There are several different social structures in monkeys.

  • In a popular troop structure known as a "one-man group," a male takes charge of a group of men and females while frequently remaining nearby.
  • The male has access to all of the ladies for mating, but other males from outside the group are continuously trying to overthrow him.
  • Males outside of the one-male group usually live in all-male groups until they are competent to take charge of their own group, according to Nature Education.

Biological Name of Monkeys

The infraorder Simiiformes is the source of the biological term for monkeys, simians. Simia is a Latin word that means "ape" or "monkey." Let's examine these two genera species names in more detail.

The word "Catarrhini," which means "hook-nosed," originated in Latin. It alludes to these species' downward-pointing nostrils. Platyrrhini, on the other hand, is Greek for broad-nosed. The phrase describes creatures with flattened and wider noses.

However, in a larger meaning based on cladistics, apes (Hominoidea) are also included, making the terms monkeys and simians synonyms in terms of their breadth. Traditionally, all creatures in the group now known as simians are counted as monkeys except apes, a paraphyletic grouping.

  • Simiiformes catarrhini (Old World Monkeys)
  • Simiiformes platyrrhini (New World Monkeys)

New World and Old World monkeys

A few species of New World monkeys have ranges that go as far north as southern Mexico or as far south as northern Argentina. New World monkeys are mostly found in tropical South America, particularly in the Amazon jungles.

  • The curious squirrel, woolly, and capuchin monkeys all exhibit to a significant extent the curiosity and intelligence ascribed to monkeys generally.
  • Alert marmosets, often tufted and colorfully arrayed, are another group of smaller New World forms that have won humans over with their antics and tamability.

  • The raucous howlers and the acrobatic spider monkeys are larger New World species. Uakaris, sakis, and titis are some other New World monkey species.
  • Old World monkeys can be found throughout Asia from Afghanistan to Japan and southeast to the islands of the Philippines, Celebes, Bacan, and Timor as well as all of Africa, including the Red Sea coast of Arabia.
  • Several West Indies islands, including Gibraltar, France, Mauritius, and Belau, have successfully naturalized some Old World monkey species.

Monkeys are available in various sizes and colors.

  • Pygmy marmosets, for example, are smaller than 6 inches tall and only weigh 100 grams.
  • Mandrill is up to 37 kilograms and 3 feet long, with a colorful nose.
  • Gorillas can weigh between 136 and 227 kg, and they can grow as tall as 2.6 m, making them similar in size to apes.
  • The old world monkeys, to be accurate, have tails but cannot utilize them to grasp branches or other items.

On the other hand,

  • Simians with flatter noses and nostrils facing sideways are seen in the monkey tribe Platyrrhini. These monkeys have prehensile tails that can be employed for stability and ease while clutching branches, trees, and other objects.
  • Depending on the strength of their tail, they can also hang from trees.
  • The spider monkey is one of the best illustrations of the enormous variation in fur and skin tones.
  • A tiny pink face protrudes from its long, black fur. These species stand out from the others due to their unusual skin and fur colors.

Things to Remember

  • The scientific name of monkeys is Cercopithecidae.
  • Any mammal belonging to the infraorder Simiiformes, usually known as the simians, may be referred to as a "monkey."
  • There are two groups of monkeys: New World monkeys and Old World monkeys (Cercopithecidae in the strict sense; Catarrhini in the broad sense, which again includes apes).
  • Any member of the diverse and expansive primate order is referred to as a monkey.
  • All primates that do not fit into the categories of humans, apes, or prosimians are referred to be monkeys; yet, monkeys have several traits in common.

Ques. What is the scientific name for a monkey? (1 mark)

Ans. The Scientific name of monkeys is Cercopithecidae.

Ques. What is the family of a monkey? (2 marks)

Ans. Old World and New World are the two main subgroups of monkeys. Old World monkeys are collectively categorized as catarrhines and are all members of the Cercopithecidae family, which is related to apes and humans. The platyrrhines are a family of five groups of monkeys native to the New World.

Ques. How can we distinguish between New World and Old World monkeys? (2 marks)

Ans. The shape of the nose is what distinguishes New World (platyrrhine) from Old World (catarrhine) monkeys, as suggested by their taxonomy names. While Old World monkeys, like apes and humans, have narrow noses with a thin septum and downward-facing nostrils, New World monkeys have broad noses with a wide septum separating them.
