'The Browning Version Summary

This lesson portrays the relationship between a sixteen years old student- Taplow, and his teacher Mr. Crocker Harris who is very strict. Through this extract of a play, the author also tried to criticize the education system and the teaching-learning process.

  • This part of the play begins with Taplow, a student of lower grade, waiting for his teacher Mr. Crocker Harris in the detention room.
  • But instead of Mr. Crocker Harris, another teacher Mr. Frank noticed Taplow waiting alone and decided to talk with him.
  • Through the dialogues between Taplow and Mr. Frank, it was evident that Taplow is afraid of Mr. Crocker Harris and wonders if he will at all be promoted to the next class.
  • Mr. Frank understood that like other students, Taplow also thinks Mr. Crocker Harris is “hardly human”, and suggests Taplow go out and play golf.
  • This part of the play ends as Mrs. Millie Harris, wife of Mr. Crocker Harris enters the room and suggests Taplow go and play in the pretense of refilling Mr. Millie Harris’s prescriptions.
