The full form of LPG is Liquefied Petroleum Gas. Liquefied petroleum gas or LPG is a flammable mixture of hydrocarbon gases used as a fuel for heating, cooking, and vehicles.

  • The gases are liquified by applying pressure to them.
  • It is a clean fuel that is sold in cylinders in its liquid form.
  • It is colorless and an odorless gas that is heavier than air.
  • LPG is able to produce more heat in a shorter period of time.
  • Liquefied Petroleum Gas is extracted from natural gas and crude oil through refining and processing respectively.

LPG is a gas that is mainly composed of propane and butane. The liquefied LPG is highly flammable and heavier than air. It is produced by a huge amount of carbon dioxide and greenhouse gas. It is also used in domestic and industrial fields.

Characteristics of LPG

The main properties of LPG are –

  • It is one of the cleanest fuels available in nature.
  • LPG produces fewer air pollutants as compared to diesel, oil, or coal.
  • It does not have any harmful effects on soil, water, or underground aquifers.

Applications of LPG

The uses of LPG include –

  • It is commonly used as fuel for vehicles.
  • LPG is energy efficient as it has a less damaging impact on the atmosphere.
  • It reduces the use of coal and wood which releases carbon dioxide.
  • LPG is also used in refrigerators.

LPG finds application in electrical energy for running turbines.
