What is NEET PG 2027?

NEET PG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Post Graduate) is India’s only national-level entrance examination for admission to postgraduate medical courses — MD, MS, and PG Diploma programmes. Every MBBS graduate who wants to pursue a medical specialisation must clear this exam. NBEMS (National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences) conducts the exam once every year.

NEET PG replaced individual PG entrance exams held by various medical colleges and universities starting from 2012–13. Today, all government and private medical colleges in India (except certain central institutes that use INI-CET) admit postgraduate students based on the NEET PG score and rank.

For NEET PG 2027, around 2.5 lakh MBBS doctors are expected to compete for over 58,000 PG medical seats in more than 700 medical colleges. The exam is held in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode and conducted in English only.

NEET PG 2027 Eligibility Criteria

You should check the NEET PG 2027 eligibility criteria carefully before applying. You must meet all conditions at the time of application. Below are the key requirements based on the existing NBEMS guidelines.

Degree Requirement

You must have an MBBS degree from a medical college recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC) of India. MBBS degrees from foreign universities are also considered, provided they are recognised by NMC and the candidate has cleared the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) or the National Exit Test (NExT) once it replaces FMGE.

Internship Completion

You must have completed the mandatory one-year rotating internship (housemanship). Candidates who are in the final stages of their internship may also be eligible, provided they complete it by the last date specified in the information bulletin. NBEMS sets a specific internship completion deadline in each year’s bulletin — you must check this carefully once the 2027 bulletin is released.

Medical Registration

You must be registered with a recognised State Medical Council or with the National Medical Commission. This is a mandatory requirement. If you have not yet obtained your registration, complete the process before applying.

NEET PG 2027 Exam Pattern

NBEMS revised the NEET PG exam pattern starting from the 2026 cycle. The total number of questions was reduced from 200 to 180, and a sectional time limit was introduced for the first time. The NEET PG 2027 exam pattern is expected to follow the same format unless NBEMS announces changes in the official 2027 information bulletin.

NEET PG 2027 Exam Pattern: Overview

Parameter Details (Expected for 2027)
Exam Mode Computer Based Test (CBT)
Total Questions 180 MCQs
Number of Sections 5 sections (36 questions each)
Time Limit per Section 42 minutes (strict sectional limit)
Total Duration 3 hours 30 minutes (210 minutes)
Correct Answer +4 marks
Wrong Answer −1 mark (negative marking applies)
Unattempted Question 0 marks
Total Marks 720
Question Type Single Best Response (SBR) MCQs
Language English only

Key Changes in NEET PG Pattern (Introduced in 2026)

Two important changes were made for the 2026 exam and are expected to continue in NEET PG 2027:

  • Reduced question count: The paper was reduced from 200 to 180 questions. Total marks dropped from 800 to 720. The objective was to shorten the overall exam duration while keeping the coverage broad.
  • Sectional time limits: The 180 questions are divided into 5 sections of 36 questions each. You get exactly 42 minutes per section. Once the 42 minutes are over, you cannot go back to that section. You must manage time within each section carefully.

This sectional time format changes how you should prepare. Practising full mock tests in sectional mode — not just doing all questions in a free-flow manner — is essential from early in your preparation.

How Many Questions Per Subject?

NBEMS does not officially publish a subject-wise question distribution. Based on the 2026 exam analysis and previous papers, the approximate distribution is:

  • Medicine and Psychiatry: 25–30 questions
  • Surgery and Anaesthesiology: 20–25 questions
  • Pathology: 15–18 questions
  • Pharmacology: 12–15 questions
  • Community Medicine (PSM): 12–15 questions
  • OB-Gynaecology: 12–15 questions
  • Microbiology: 10–12 questions
  • Paediatrics: 10–12 questions
  • Ophthalmology and ENT: 8–10 questions combined
  • Radiology, Orthopaedics, Dermatology and others: 10–15 questions
  • Pre-clinical (Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry): 10–15 questions

NEET PG 2027 Syllabus

NBEMS does not publish a separate subject-wise topic list for NEET PG. The NEET PG 2027 syllabus covers the entire MBBS curriculum as prescribed by the National Medical Commission (NMC). All subjects taught during the MBBS course are part of the syllabus.

The syllabus is broadly divided into three groups — pre-clinical, para-clinical, and clinical subjects.

Pre-Clinical Subjects

  • Anatomy: General anatomy, upper and lower limb, head and neck, thorax, abdomen, neuroanatomy, embryology, histology
  • Physiology: General physiology, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, gastrointestinal system, renal system, nervous system, endocrinology, reproductive physiology
  • Biochemistry: Biomolecules, enzymology, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, molecular biology, nutrition, clinical biochemistry

Para-Clinical Subjects

  • Pathology: General pathology (cell injury, inflammation, healing), systemic pathology, haematology, clinical pathology
  • Pharmacology: General pharmacology, autonomic pharmacology, CNS drugs, cardiovascular drugs, chemotherapy, endocrine pharmacology, adverse drug reactions
  • Microbiology: General microbiology, bacteriology, virology, parasitology, mycology, immunology
  • Forensic Medicine and Toxicology: Medical jurisprudence, forensic pathology, forensic toxicology, clinical forensic medicine
  • Community Medicine (PSM): Epidemiology, biostatistics, health administration, nutrition, occupational health, environmental health, national health programmes

Clinical Subjects

  • General Medicine and Allied: Medicine, Dermatology and STDs, Psychiatry
  • General Surgery and Allied: Surgery, Orthopaedics, Anaesthesiology
  • OB-Gynaecology: Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Family Planning
  • Paediatrics
  • Ophthalmology
  • ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat)
  • Radiology and Imaging

Among all subjects, Medicine, Surgery, Pathology, Pharmacology, and Community Medicine tend to have the highest number of questions in the NEET PG paper. These five subjects alone can account for nearly 55–60% of the total paper.

NBEMS may revise the syllabus framework in the 2027 information bulletin. Check natboard.edu.in once the bulletin is released for any subject-level changes.

NEET PG 2027 Admit Card

NBEMS will release the NEET PG 2027 admit card on the official website. Based on previous patterns, the admit card is released around 5–7 days before the exam. In 2026, the admit card came out on August 25, 2026 for an August 30, 2026 exam. For NEET PG 2027, the admit card is expected in August 2027 once the exam date is finalised.

How to Download NEET PG 2027 Admit Card

  • Go to the official NBEMS website: natboard.edu.in
  • Click on the NEET PG 2027 Admit Card link on the homepage
  • Log in with your NBEMS registration number and date of birth
  • Check all details on the admit card carefully

You must carry a printed admit card and a valid photo ID (Aadhaar card, Passport, or Voter ID) to the exam centre. NBEMS does not issue duplicate admit cards at the centre. If there is any error in your admit card details — name, photograph, or exam centre — contact NBEMS immediately.

City Intimation Slip

Before releasing the full admit card, NBEMS usually releases a city intimation slip. This slip mentions only your exam city. You can use it to book travel and accommodation. The admit card with the full centre address comes a few days later. In 2026, the city slip was released about 10 days before the exam date.

NEET PG 2027 Result

NBEMS will declare the NEET PG 2027 result on its official website at natboard.edu.in. Based on the 2026 pattern, the result is expected around September–October 2027. In 2026, the result was declared on September 24, 2026 — within 25 days of the August 30 exam. About 2.66 lakh candidates appeared for NEET PG 2026.

What the NEET PG 2027 Result Contains

  • All India Rank (AIR) in the General category
  • Category-wise rank (OBC, SC, ST, PwD)
  • Total marks scored (out of 720)
  • Section-wise marks (for all 5 sections)
  • Qualifying status — eligible or not eligible for counselling
  • Percentile score

NEET PG 2027 Scorecard

The individual scorecard for NEET PG 2027 will be available for download a few days after the result declaration. In 2026, scorecards were released on October 1, 2026 — about one week after the result on September 24. You will need your scorecard at the time of MCC and state counselling document verification. Keep printed copies ready before the counselling begins.

NEET PG 2027 Merit List

NBEMS publishes an All India merit list along with the result. This ranked list of all qualifying candidates is used by MCC and state counselling bodies for seat allotment. Your position on this merit list determines which colleges and specialities you can apply for in counselling. Candidates who do not meet the qualifying percentile do not appear on the merit list and cannot apply for counselling.

NEET PG 2027 Cutoff (Qualifying Marks)

NEET PG has two types of cutoffs. The qualifying cutoff is the minimum percentile a candidate must score to be eligible for counselling. The admission cutoff is the minimum rank needed to secure a specific seat at a specific college — this varies by speciality and college and is determined through the counselling seat allotment process.

NEET PG Qualifying Percentile (Fixed by Regulation)

The qualifying percentile for NEET PG is fixed by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. It has remained the same since 2018 and is not expected to change for 2027:

Category Qualifying Percentile 2027 Cutoff Marks
General / UR / EWS 50th Percentile To be announced with result
OBC / SC / ST 40th Percentile To be announced with result
General-PwBD 45th Percentile To be announced with result
OBC / SC / ST-PwBD 40th Percentile To be announced with result

The qualifying percentile is set by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. NBEMS announces the corresponding raw marks (qualifying cutoff marks out of 720) at the time of result declaration. These raw marks change each year depending on paper difficulty.

NEET PG Admission Cutoff: What Determines It?

Simply qualifying the 50th percentile does not guarantee a seat. The actual seat depends on your rank relative to other candidates and the total seats available in each speciality and college. Competitive specialities at top government colleges fill up at very high ranks. For example:

  • MD Radiodiagnosis (top govt colleges): Closing rank usually within the top 200–500
  • MD Dermatology (top govt colleges): Closing rank usually within the top 300–700
  • MD General Medicine, MS General Surgery (top govt colleges): Closing rank usually within 1,000–3,000
  • PG Diploma and non-clinical specialities: Seats available at much higher ranks, often beyond 20,000

The NEET PG 2027 counselling closing ranks will be released by MCC after each round of counselling, expected in October–November 2027. Use 2026 closing ranks (released October 2026) as a reference to gauge competition levels.

NEET PG 2027 Marks vs Rank

Your score in NEET PG 2027 directly determines your rank. With around 2.5 lakh candidates expected to appear and 720 total marks, even a difference of 10–15 marks can shift your rank by several thousand positions at the middle of the distribution. The score–rank relationship is steeper at the top end, where a few marks make a big difference, and flatter at the bottom, where thousands of candidates cluster.

The table below gives an indicative rank bracket for each score range, based on the 2026 exam pattern (180 questions, 720 marks). Actual NEET PG 2027 ranks will depend on the number of candidates and paper difficulty:

Score Range (out of 720) Indicative General Category Rank Likely Admission Prospect
600 – 720 1 – 100 Top specialities (MD Radiodiagnosis, MD Dermatology) at premier government colleges
540 – 600 100 – 1,000 Clinical specialities at top government and central university colleges
480 – 540 1,000 – 5,000 Good clinical specialities at government colleges in major cities
420 – 480 5,000 – 15,000 Clinical and para-clinical specialities at government or reputed private colleges
360 – 420 15,000 – 35,000 PG Diploma or less competitive specialities at government colleges or private colleges
300 – 360 35,000 – 70,000 DNB seats or private college seats in non-competitive specialities
Below 300 Below 70,000 or non-qualifying May not qualify; limited options if qualifying percentile not met

The rank estimates above are indicative and based on 2026 NEET PG trends. They are for the General/UR category. SC/ST/OBC and PwD candidates have separate rank lists and lower qualifying cutoffs. Actual rank for NEET PG 2027 will depend on the difficulty of the paper and the number of candidates who appear.

NEET PG 2027 Counselling Process

After the NEET PG 2027 result is declared, all qualifying candidates can take part in counselling. There are two parallel counselling streams — MCC counselling (centralised) and state counselling. You must register separately for each one.

MCC NEET PG Counselling 2027

The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), conducts centralised counselling for:

  • 50% All India Quota (AIQ) seats in government medical colleges
  • 100% seats in Central University medical colleges
  • 100% seats in Deemed Universities
  • Central pool seats

In 2026, MCC offered more than 31,708 seats (including about 13,522 AIQ MD/MS seats, 9,201 DNB seats, and 7,537 deemed university seats) through its counselling. The 2027 seat matrix will be similar, with potential additions based on new NMC recognitions.

NEET PG 2027 MCC Counselling Rounds

  • Round 1: Registration, choice filling, seat allotment, and reporting. Candidates can accept, upgrade (participate in Round 2), or exit.
  • Round 2: Open to Round 1 candidates who want an upgrade and to newly eligible candidates. Same process of choice filling and allotment.
  • Mop-Up / Stray Vacancy Round: Seats left unfilled after Round 2 are offered in this final round. Only candidates who did not accept a seat in Rounds 1 and 2 can participate.

State Counselling for NEET PG 2027

Each state or union territory conducts its own counselling for 50% state quota seats in government colleges and all seats in private medical colleges within the state. State counselling schedules, fee, and procedures vary. In 2026, most states ran their Round 1 counselling in October–November 2026. You must check your state’s medical counselling authority website for the 2027 state schedule.

Qualifying NEET PG 2027 does not automatically enrol you in counselling. You must separately register on the MCC portal (mcc.nic.in) and your state counselling portal to participate.

NEET PG 2027 Counselling Fee (Expected)

  • MCC registration fee: Rs. 1,000 (non-refundable, expected)
  • Security deposit (government colleges): Rs. 30,000–Rs. 2,00,000 (refundable on joining or forfeiture conditions)
  • Security deposit (deemed/private colleges): Higher amount, as specified by MCC

NEET PG 2027 Preparation Tips

As of October 2026, NEET PG 2027 is approximately 9–10 months away. This is an ideal time to start a structured preparation plan if you are aiming for a good rank and a competitive speciality. Here are practical tips based on the current exam pattern and previous NEET PG trends.

1. Get Familiar With the Sectional Time Format

NEET PG 2026 introduced a strict sectional time limit — 42 minutes per 36-question section with no going back to a previous section. This format will likely continue in 2027. Practise in sectional mode from the start. You get less than 70 seconds per question. Build speed without compromising accuracy.

2. Prioritise High-Yield Subjects

Spend your first three months on the subjects that carry the most weight in the paper. Medicine, Surgery, Pathology, Pharmacology, and Community Medicine together account for around 55–60% of questions. Mastering these five subjects gives you the strongest foundation. You can cover lower-weight subjects like Biochemistry and Anatomy alongside.

3. Use Previous Year Questions (PYQs)

Solving the last 5–7 years of NEET PG questions is one of the most effective strategies. Many concepts and question patterns repeat across years. If you identify recurring themes for each subject, you can focus your revision time more efficiently. Solve PYQs subject-wise, not just year-wise.

4. Take Regular Mock Tests and Grand Tests

Start full-length sectional mock tests at least 3 months before the exam. Mock tests help you understand where you stand, identify weak sections, and improve time management under pressure. Review every incorrect answer carefully — understanding why you went wrong is more valuable than completing more tests.

5. Build Short Revision Notes

You will study a large volume of content for NEET PG. Make concise subject-wise notes as you progress. In the final 4–6 weeks, dedicate almost all your time to revising these notes rather than covering new material. Quick recall of high-yield facts makes the real difference in the final score.

6. Follow NBEMS for Pattern Updates

NBEMS may release the 2027 information bulletin with any changes to the number of questions, marking scheme, or sectional structure. Check natboard.edu.in regularly. If changes are announced, adjust your preparation strategy. Candidates who miss pattern updates risk preparing for the wrong format.
