Nutrition is the process by which food is consumed by organisms, converted into energy and the nutrients are used from the food.

  • Organisms use nutrients for their life processes through the process of nutrition.
  • Nutrients provide energy and biomolecules to organisms for necessary functions.
  • The main nutrients are carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, and roughage.
  • The mode of nutrition varies from one organism to another.

Types of Nutrition

The 2 main modes of nutrition are – 

  1. Autotrophic Nutrition

In the autotrophic mode of nutrition, organisms make use of simple inorganic matter like water and carbon dioxide in the presence of chlorophyll and light in order to synthesize food on their own. 

  1. Heterotrophic Nutrition

All organisms can not produce food on their own, they depend on others for nutrition. These organisms are known as heterotrophs, and the mode of nutrition through which they acquire food is called heterotrophic nutrition
