Difference between data and information is that data can be anything between a number, character, or code, while information is data put into context. Information can be used by humans in many significant ways (like making decisions, or forecasts).

Data and information are terms that are frequently used interchangeably. However, they don't have the same meaning. The distinctions are small, but they are substantial. Individual facts are regarded as data, whereas information is defined as the organizing and understanding of such facts. An example of information can be a computer. A computer is known to use its programming scripts, formulas, or software applications in order to turn data into pieces of information.

Whereas, data can be classified into two parts:

  • Qualitative data: It is a non-numerical form of data. Example: The colour of the eyes.
  • Quantitative data: Quantitative data can be specified in numbers. Data that can be interpreted in terms of “how much” and “how many”, gives quantitative data.

A collection of specific facts or statistics is referred to as data. (Although "datum" is technically the single version of "data," it is rarely used in daily speech.) Text, observations, figures, photos, numbers, graphs, and symbols are all examples of data. Individual prices, weights, addresses, ages, names, temperatures, dates, and distances are examples of data.

  • Data can be explained as an unprocessed type of knowledge that has no meaning or purpose in and of itself. 
  • Data should be interpreted with full “information” in order for it to be meaningful.
  • Data might be straightforward, but can appear to be useless, until it is examined, organized, and understood.

There are two main types of data:

  • Quantitative data is provided in numerical forms, like the weight, volume, or cost of an item.
  • Qualitative data is descriptive but non-numerical, like the name, sex, or eye color of a person.

Knowledge obtained by study, communication, research, or education is referred to as information. Information is essentially the outcome of studying and understanding data. Information is the impression of those pieces of knowledge, whereas data is the particular figures, statistics, or graphs.

  • Temperature readings at a location spanning multiple years, for example, might be included in a set of data. Those temperatures have little relevance without any extra context. 
  • However, by analyzing and organizing that data, you may be able to identify seasonal temperature patterns or even larger climatic trends.

Data Information
It refers to the basic and random data that one obtains about anything. Information is a set of information about anything that has been contextualized and enhanced via processing.
Data can be structured as Tabular Data, Data trees and Graphs. Information can be structured as Ideas or Language.
It is low-level knowledge. It is second-level knowledge.
Data is a collection of facts that separately contain no meaning. Information, after gathering the data, puts the facts into meaning.
Data doesn't depend on information. Information depends on data.

Here are some examples of Data and Information-

  • A single customer's bill amount is data at a restaurant. While Restaurant operators may get useful information by collecting and interpreting many invoices over time, such as which menu items are the most popular and if the prices are sufficient to cover supplies, overhead, and labour.
  • A point of data is a consumer's response to an individual customer service survey. However, by combining one customer's replies over time, and several customers' responses over time, you may gain insight into areas where your customer support staff can improve.
  • Inventory levels are data in and of themselves. Companies, on the other hand, may discover supply chain bottlenecks and improve system performance by analyzing and interpreting data over time.
  • Prices of rivals are individual data components, but analyzing them can highlight where competitors have an edge, where market gaps may exist, and how a firm might outperform its competitors.
