NIFT 2027: Registration Expected November, Eligibility, Pattern, Syllabus and Cutoff

NIFT 2027 is the National Institute of Fashion Technology Entrance Examination, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission to B.Des, B.FTech, M.Des, M.FTech, and M.FM programmes at 16 NIFT campuses across India. • Registration: NIFT 2027 registration is expected to open in November 2026. In the previous cycle (NIFT 2026), registration opened in November 2025 and closed on January 19, 2026 with a late-fee option of ₹5,000 extra.

What is NIFT 2027?

NIFT stands for National Institute of Fashion Technology. The NIFT Entrance Examination (also called NIFTEE) is a national-level test conducted by NTA on behalf of NIFT for admission to fashion, design, technology, and management programmes. NIFT is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. It was established in 1986 and formally constituted under the National Institute of Fashion Technology Act, 2006.

NIFT has 16 campuses across India — in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, Gandhinagar, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Kangra, Kannur, Patna, Raebareli, Shillong, Bhopal, and Srinagar. The Delhi campus is the most sought after, and the cutoff there is among the tightest in the country.

The NIFT 2027 entrance exam is a two-stage process. Stage 1 is a written test held on a single day. Stage 2 is a Situation Test (for B.Des) or a Personal Interview (for PG programmes). B.FTech candidates only appear for the Stage 1 GAT test — no creative test or Stage 2 is required for them.

NIFT 2027 tests candidates on two components:

• GAT (General Ability Test): Computer-based, objective, with negative marking. Tests English, quantitative ability, logical reasoning, and general knowledge. All programmes require GAT.
• CAT (Creative Ability Test): Pen-and-paper, subjective, no negative marking. Tests sketching, colour rendering, creative composition, and design thinking. Required only for B.Des and M.Des.

NIFT 2027 Notification and Registration

The NIFT 2027 official notification has not been released as of October 17, 2026. Based on past cycles, NTA typically releases the NIFT notification in November. The notification will contain the official exam brochure with confirmed dates, eligibility, fee structure, exam pattern, and application instructions for NIFT 2027.

You can register for NIFT 2027 on the official NTA portal at exams.nta.ac.in/NIFTEE once registration opens. In the 2026 cycle, the portal received more than 55,000 applications for B.Des and B.FTech alone. The registration is entirely online — no offline or postal applications are accepted.

Documents to Keep Ready Before Registration Opens

Prepare these documents in advance so you can complete registration quickly once it opens:

• Recent passport-size photograph (white background, clear face, JPG format, file size as specified in the notification)
• Scanned signature (black ink on white paper, JPG format)
• Class 10 marksheet or birth certificate (for date of birth proof)
• Class 12 marksheet or passing certificate — or the 2027 board exam admit card if you are appearing this year
• Category certificate (SC / ST / OBC-NCL / EWS / PwD) if applicable, issued by a competent authority
• Valid Aadhaar card (for eKYC verification; this is mandatory)

NIFT 2027 registration is a five-step process: create a login with your email and phone number, fill the application form, upload documents, complete Aadhaar-based eKYC, and pay the application fee. Once you submit and pay, you cannot make corrections — so check all details carefully before the final submission.

You can apply for both B.Des and B.FTech in a single application. Similarly, PG candidates can apply for multiple PG programmes. You choose your NIFT campus preferences at the time of counselling, not during application.

NIFT 2027 Eligibility Criteria

NIFT 2027 eligibility criteria vary by programme. You must check your eligibility carefully before applying — ineligible candidates are rejected at the document verification stage, not at the application stage. Your application may be accepted and your admit card issued, but admission will be cancelled if you do not meet the criteria at the time of reporting.

Nationality: Indian nationals can apply. Foreign nationals, NRIs, OCI/PIO card holders are also eligible under a separate NRI/Foreign category with a reserved percentage of seats at each campus.

Attempts: There is no limit on the number of attempts for NIFT. You can apply every year as long as you meet the age and qualification criteria.

B.Des Specializations: NIFT offers 7 specializations under B.Des — Fashion Design, Textile Design, Leather Design, Accessory Design, Knitwear Design, Fashion Communication, and Lifestyle Accessory Design. You choose your specialization preference at the time of counselling.

Class 12 appearing students can apply for B.Des and B.FTech. Your admission will be confirmed only after you submit the final Class 12 marksheet at the time of counselling. You must have passed Class 12 with the required subjects by that point.

NIFT 2027 Application Process and Fee

The NIFT 2027 application process is fully online. Once the registration window opens in November 2026, follow these steps to complete your application for NIFT 2027:

• Step 1 — Create Login: Visit exams.nta.ac.in/NIFTEE and register with your email ID and mobile number. The system generates your Application Number and password.
• Step 2 — Fill Application Form: Log in and fill personal details, educational qualifications, programme choice (UG/PG), category, and contact information.
• Step 3 — Upload Documents: Upload your scanned photograph (10–200 KB), scanned signature (4–30 KB), and other documents as per the official specification. Wrong file size or format will lead to rejection of the application.
• Step 4 — eKYC Verification: Complete Aadhaar-based eKYC. This is mandatory and links your biometric identity to your NIFT application.
• Step 5 — Pay Application Fee: Pay via net banking, credit card, debit card, or UPI. The fee is non-refundable in all cases. Download and keep the payment confirmation page.

After successful payment, download and print the confirmation page. This is your proof of submission — keep it safe until admission is complete.

NIFT 2027 Application Fee

The application fee covers both UG and PG programmes if you apply for multiple programmes in one application — you do not pay separately for each programme you choose.

NIFT 2027 Admit Card

The NIFT 2027 admit card will be released on the official NTA portal. Based on the previous year pattern, you can expect the admit card in the last week of December 2026 or the first week of January 2027 — roughly one week before the Stage 1 exam. No hall ticket will be sent by post — you must download it yourself from the official portal.

What to Carry to the NIFT 2027 Exam Centre

• Printed admit card (colour printout preferred)
• One valid original photo identity proof — Aadhaar card, PAN card, passport, or driving licence
• For CAT (Creative Ability Test): pencils, colour pencils or crayons, eraser, sharpener (as per the notification’s permitted items list — confirm before exam day)

NIFT 2027 Syllabus

The NIFT 2027 syllabus covers two distinct tests — GAT and CAT — and each requires a completely different preparation approach. GAT preparation is aptitude-based, while CAT preparation is rooted in sustained creative and drawing practice. You cannot substitute one for the other, and both must be prepared simultaneously.

GAT Syllabus for NIFT 2027

The GAT syllabus covers four main areas for UG programmes and five areas for PG programmes:

• Communication Ability and English Comprehension: Reading passages with inference questions, grammar correction, sentence completion, synonyms and antonyms, one-word substitution, fill in the blanks, idioms and phrases, vocabulary from editorial writing
• Quantitative Ability: Number systems, percentages, profit and loss, ratio and proportion, averages, time and work, simple and compound interest, basic data interpretation (bar graphs, pie charts, line graphs, tables)
• Analytical and Logical Reasoning: Series completion — number, letter, and figure series; analogies; odd one out; coding and decoding; direction sense; blood relations; seating arrangements; logical puzzles involving conditions
• General Knowledge and Current Affairs: Indian and international fashion designers, textile and fabric knowledge, art movements, architecture history, major fashion awards (Lakme Fashion Week, FDCI, National Awards for Design), recent government textile schemes, NIFT alumni achievements, sports, geography, and Indian constitution basics
• Case Study (PG programmes only): Scenario-based analytical questions on fashion retail business, supply chain logic, pricing decisions, and market strategy — mostly reading-based with inference and recommendation questions

The GK section in NIFT GAT is high-scoring and often the deciding factor among candidates with similar aptitude scores. Follow fashion industry news, textile ministry announcements, and design award updates throughout your preparation for NIFT 2027.

CAT Syllabus for NIFT 2027

The NIFT CAT does not have a fixed topic-based syllabus. It is a studio-style drawing and design test. The question paper typically asks you to:

• Create a composition or visual story using given objects, themes, or words as prompts
• Sketch a product, garment, or accessory with attention to proportion and detailing
• Use colour (pastels, colour pencils, or crayons) to add life, mood, and visual appeal to your composition
• Demonstrate imagination, originality, and an understanding of visual aesthetics within the given time

NIFT evaluates your CAT answer sheet on line quality, composition balance, colour sense, creativity, and concept expression. There are no right or wrong answers — only stronger or weaker creative responses.

NIFT 2027 Situation Test and Stage 2

Stage 2 of NIFT 2027 is different for each programme. B.Des candidates take the Situation Test, while PG programme candidates (M.Des, M.FM, M.FTech) appear for a Personal Interview. B.FTech has no Stage 2 — admission is based entirely on GAT scores from Stage 1.

NIFT Situation Test for B.Des

The Situation Test is a hands-on model-making exercise. You are given a situation or theme and a set of materials (paper, cardboard, glue, pins, threads, fabric scraps — as provided by NIFT at the test centre). You must create a 3D model and write a concept note explaining your design idea within the allotted time.

• Duration: 2 hours (confirmed in Stage 2 call letter)
• Marks: 100, which carries 20% weightage in the B.Des composite score
• Shortlisting: Only Stage 1 qualified candidates are called — typically 3 to 4 times the number of available B.Des seats
• You must physically travel to your assigned test city; the test is conducted at select NIFT campuses
• You cannot bring your own materials — all materials are provided at the test centre

The Situation Test is a creative expression test, not a technical craft test. NIFT evaluators look for originality, concept clarity, material use, and the story behind your model — not perfect craftsmanship. A simple, well-explained concept often scores higher than an elaborate but poorly justified model.

Personal Interview for PG Programmes

M.Des, M.FM, and M.FTech candidates who qualify Stage 1 are called for a Personal Interview at a NIFT campus. The PI carries 30% weightage in the final composite score for all PG programmes. The interview panel evaluates domain knowledge, creative thinking, communication skills, and awareness of the fashion and design industry.

NIFT 2027 Stage 2 (Situation Test / PI) is expected in April–May 2027, consistent with the 2026 cycle where Stage 2 was also held in April–May 2026.

NIFT 2027 Result

The NIFT 2027 result will come in two phases: Stage 1 result (expected March 2027) and the final composite result (expected June 2027). The Stage 1 result determines who is shortlisted for Stage 2. The final result after Stage 2 gives your programme-wise merit rank, which is what counts for counselling and seat allotment.

Stage 1 Result

The Stage 1 result will show your individual GAT and CAT scores, your total Stage 1 score, and whether you are shortlisted for Stage 2. NIFT sets a qualifying threshold — candidates below this threshold are not called for Stage 2 regardless of their individual GAT or CAT score. In the 2026 cycle, the Stage 1 result was declared on March 20, 2026, about six weeks after the February 8 exam.

Final Composite Result

The final NIFT 2027 result will include your overall composite score (based on programme-wise weightage across all components) and your programme-wise merit rank. This rank is used during counselling to allocate seats at your preferred campuses and specializations.

Top NIFT Colleges and Seats 2027

NIFT has 16 campuses across India. All campuses offer B.Des, and most also offer B.FTech. PG programmes (M.Des, M.FM, M.FTech) are available at select campuses. The total B.Des intake is approximately 2,010 seats and B.FTech intake is approximately 360 seats. The older metro campuses in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Chennai have stronger industry connections and placement records.

All NIFT campuses follow the same curriculum framework, and a B.Des degree from any NIFT campus holds the same standing nationally. Reservation applies across all campuses: 15% seats for SC, 7.5% for ST, 27% for OBC-NCL, 10% for EWS, and 5% horizontal reservation for PwD candidates within each category.

How to Prepare for NIFT 2027

With the Stage 1 exam tentatively on January 10, 2027, you have roughly three months from October 2026 to prepare. NIFT 2027 preparation needs two parallel tracks: one for GAT (aptitude-based) and one for CAT (drawing and creativity). Neither can substitute for the other — both run simultaneously from today until exam day.

GAT Preparation Strategy

• English and Communication: Read newspapers and quality magazines every day. Practice reading comprehension from NIFT previous year GAT papers. Focus on vocabulary, grammar, and sentence construction — the English section is straightforward but speed matters.
• Quantitative Ability: Cover Class 10 level arithmetic thoroughly — percentages, ratios, averages, and basic data interpretation are the most frequent topics in NIFT GAT. Speed and accuracy here count more than complex problem-solving.
• Logical Reasoning: Practice series completion, analogies, and coding-decoding from standard aptitude books. The NIFT GAT reasoning section is typically moderate in difficulty and rewards candidates who have practised consistently.
• General Knowledge: This is the highest-value preparation area for NIFT. Follow fashion news — Indian and international designers, recent runway shows, textile exhibitions, NIFT alumni achievements, and government textile policies. Study Lakme Fashion Week, India Fashion Week, and FDCI updates. Also cover national awards, geography, and current affairs from the last 12 months.

CAT Preparation Strategy

• Draw every day without exception — even 30 minutes of daily sketching builds muscle memory and line confidence within three months
• Practice from still life, imagination, and theme-based prompts; work with limited colour palettes to develop control and make deliberate colour choices
• Study composition principles — use art books, design portfolios, and illustration references to build an eye for balance and visual flow
• Practise NIFT CAT previous year question papers to understand the kind of prompts, time pressure, and sheet size involved
• Use colour pencils or pastels as specified by the notification; get comfortable with both mediums since the permitted items list can vary

Situation Test Preparation

If you are applying for B.Des, also start thinking about the Situation Test. Try small model-making exercises at home using everyday materials — paper, cardboard, newspaper, string, and cloth scraps. Practise expressing a clear concept rather than a perfectly built model. The evaluators value ideation and narrative over neat craftsmanship.

In the last month before the NIFT 2027 exam, attempt at least 3–5 full-length GAT mock tests under timed conditions. Time management is a real challenge in GAT — 100 questions in 120 minutes means roughly 72 seconds per question on average. Practising with a timer trains you to pace yourself and avoid spending too long on any single question.
