What is NIFT 2026?

NIFT 2026 Eligibility Criteria

NIFT 2026 eligibility differs by programme level. You must check the criteria for your chosen programme carefully before applying. There is no minimum percentage requirement in Class 12 for general NIFT eligibility.

UG Programmes — B.Des and B.F.Tech

• Academic Qualification: You must have passed Class 12 (10+2) from any recognised board, or be appearing in the 2025-26 board exam. All streams — Science, Commerce, Arts, and Vocational — are accepted for B.Des.
• B.F.Tech Specific: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics must be compulsory subjects in Class 12. B.F.Tech is a fashion technology programme requiring a science background.
• Age Limit: You must not be more than 24 years old as on August 1, 2026.
  • SC, ST, and PwD candidates get a 5-year relaxation (maximum age: 29 years)
  • OBC-NCL candidates get a 3-year relaxation (maximum age: 27 years)

UG Lateral Entry — B.Des or B.F.Tech (Direct 2nd Year)

• You must hold a 3-year Undergraduate Diploma from NIFT or NID.
• Admission is directly to the 2nd year of the programme. A valid NIFT 2026 CMR is required for lateral entry counselling.

PG Programmes — M.Des, M.F.Tech, and MFM

• Academic Qualification: A Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a university recognised by law in India, OR a 3-year Undergraduate Diploma from NIFT or NID.
• Age Limit: No upper age limit for any PG programme.

NRI, OCI, PIO, Foreign National, and SAARC Candidates

• The NIFT entrance exam is NOT required for Foreign Nationals, NRIs, OCIs, PIOs, and SAARC candidates.
• Admission is based on SAT, GMAT, or GRE scores — minimum 50% equivalent.
• Scores must be from January 1, 2024 onwards and must have been submitted to NIFT before the declared deadline.
• Only the highest score among SAT, GMAT, and GRE is considered for seat allotment.

NIFT 2026 Seat Reservation

Category candidates must submit valid certificates from a competent authority at document verification. OBC-NCL certificates must be from the current financial year. PwD certificates must be issued by a competent medical authority.

• Step 1 — Register: Go to the NTA NIFT portal and create a new account. Enter your name, email, and mobile number. You will receive a unique Application Number and password.
• Step 2 — Fill the Form: Log in and fill in your personal details, academic qualifications, category, and programme preferences. You can apply for more than one programme by selecting multiple options.
• Step 3 — Upload Documents: Upload a scanned photograph (white background, JPEG), your signature, and any category certificates. Check the size and format requirements before uploading.
• Step 4 — Pay the Fee: Pay online through net banking, credit card, debit card, or UPI. The fee is non-refundable.
• Step 5 — Submit and Download Confirmation: Submit the form and download the confirmation page. Save your Application Number — you will need it at every stage.

The CAT is an offline paper-based test only. No digital tools are allowed. NIFT provides drawing sheets — you must bring your own pencils (HB, 2B), coloured pencils, crayons, eraser, and sharpener. Ball pens are NOT allowed for drawing tasks.

The NIFT 2026 Stage 1 admit card was released on February 4, 2026 — four days before the exam. Candidates downloaded it from the official NTA portal by entering their Application Number and Date of Birth. A printed copy was mandatory at the exam center.

What is the NIFT CMR?

The CMR is your All-India rank across all candidates, irrespective of category. It is the primary rank used for seat allotment during e-counselling. Candidates with a lower (better) CMR get priority when filling campus and programme choices. The CatMR is your rank within your specific reservation category (General, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS, or PwD) and is used for category-wise seat distribution.

How to Prepare for NIFT Entrance Exam

NIFT is one of India’s most competitive design entrance exams. The dual test structure — objective GAT and creative CAT — means you need two separate preparation strategies running in parallel. Here are the most effective approaches for both.

GAT Preparation Strategy

• Start with past NIFT papers: The last 5 years of NIFT GAT papers are the best guide to question style, difficulty, and topic distribution. Work through them before starting any other resource. Identify weak sections early.
• Design-focused GK is the key differentiator: NIFT GK is not standard current affairs. Focus on fashion history (Indian and international), famous designers, textile types, Indian craft traditions, art movements, and major design institutions and events. Read design magazines like Vogue India and Elle Décor regularly.
• Build quantitative speed at Class 10 level: NIFT quant rewards speed and accuracy, not complexity. Practice 30–40 questions daily with a timer. Cover percentages, profit-loss, ratios, and basic geometry thoroughly from NCERT Class 9–10.
• Negative marking discipline: Every 4 wrong answers wipe out 1 correct answer. Do not guess randomly. If you are not 60% confident about an answer, skip and return to it. Strategic skipping often improves scores significantly.
• Timed sectional drills: Don’t practice only full mock tests. Do focused 20-minute drills per section — they build the speed and accuracy that matter under time pressure.

• Daily drawing — no exceptions: Consistent daily practice is the most important CAT preparation habit. Even 1–2 hours of sketching daily over 4–6 months significantly improves both speed and creative quality. Occasional bursts of effort do not work.
• Work with exam media: NIFT CAT uses coloured pencils and crayons on paper. Practice specifically with these tools — not digital apps. Build your skill on the exact materials you will use in the exam.
