Ovis aries is a breed of domesticated ruminant animal with a thick coat that is grown for its wool, edible flesh, or skin.

Sheep are even-toed ungulates in the order Artiodactyla, along with all other ruminants. Domestic sheep are the most common species of sheep, numbering just over one billion. A baby sheep is referred to as a lamb, an adult female as a ewe , a castrated male as a wether ,and an intact male as a ram.

The most popular animal fibre is sheep's wool, which is often obtained through shearing. In Commonwealth nations, ovine meat is known as lamb when it comes from younger animals and mutton when it comes from older ones. In the United States, it is known as lamb.
