Sodium hydroxide or Naoh is a chemical compound that is also known by the names of white caustic, ascarite, sodium hydrate, lyre, and caustic soda. It is white with a waxy, opaque crystal-like texture and has no smell. It consists of sodium cation and hydroxide anion.
- It is a highly corrosive ionic compound that can cause irritation in the skin and eyes if in contact.
- It acts as a cleaning agent and helps in the manufacturing of paper, detergent, soap, beverages, textiles, etc.

Each NaOH atom is surrounded by six oxygen atoms, three from hydroxyl anions OH- and three from water molecules.
- In each O layer, there is a strong bond formed between the oxygen atoms and the hydrogen atoms which is present within the hydroxyls.

Caustic soda or sodium hydroxide is prepared on a commercial scale by combining an aqueous solution of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) and hot milk of lime Ca(OH)2 in an iron tank.
Na2CO3 + Ca(OH)2 → CaCO3 + 2NaOH
