A screw gauge, also known as a micrometer, is a device with a calibrated screw that is widely used for accurate measurement of components. 

  • It is used to measure the dimensions of extremely small objects up to 0.01 mm. 
  • A screw gauge is constructed of a U-shaped metal frame. A hollow cylinder is attached to one side of the frame. 
  • Grooves are cut on the interior surface of the cylinder through which a screw travels. 
  • On the cylinders parallel to the screw axis, a millimeter scale called Pitch Scale is graded.
  • The main scale that measures the distance traveled by the spindle on each turn (in millimeters) is known as the pitch scale.
  • The distance traveled by the tip of the screw when turned through one division of the head scale is defined as the least count of the screw gauge.
  • The least count of a screw gauge is 0.01 mm.
