Ureter is a tube-like structure present in the human excretory system. The main function of the ureter is to transport urine through the pair of kidneys into the urinary bladder. 

  • There are two ureters in the excretory system, one for each renal. 
  • The top of the ureter is found in the belly, while the bottom end is found in the pelvis.
  • Toxins and excess fluids are removed by the kidneys from the bloodstream in the form of urine. 
  • The size of the ureter ranges between 10 to 12 inches in an adult human. 
  • It has robust borders made up of fibers, muscles, and mucous coating, that provided flexibility to them.

Ureter is a tube used for the transportation of urine from the kidney to the urinary bladder. It is an integral part of the human excretory system. 

  • Ureter is a kind of duct that connects the kidneys and the bladder. 
  • It is present in pairs, one for each renal. 
  • They arise in the abdomen and terminate in the pelvic cavity where they empty into the bladder.
  • Ureter can be affected by a number of diseases such as Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) and kidney stones.

Ureters are a part of the excretory system of organisms

  • It is a kind of narrow and hollow cylindrical tube.
  • It links the urinary system with the kidneys and passes the fluid through the glomerulus into the urinary bladder. 
  • Ureters use the muscles for the peristalsis movement that in turn transports the urine from the kidneys to the bladder.
  • Ureters are generally 25 to 30 cm in length. 
  • There are mainly two sections of the ureters. 
  • The top section of the ureter is present in the abdomen and the bottom end of the ureter is found in the pelvis

The anatomy of ureters is mainly separated into three different sections which are as follows:

  • Abdominal Ureter: This part of the ureter extends from the renal pelvis to the pubic symphysis.
  • Pelvic Ureter: This part of the ureter extends from the pelvic brim to the bladder.
  • Intra-Ureter: This part of the ureter is also known as intravenous infusion. It is positioned within the urinary bladder wall.

The main function of the ureter is to transport urine from the pair of kidneys to the urinary bladder. Some other detailed functions of the ureter are as follows:

  • It transports pee from the renal to the bladder of the urinary tract. 
  • It helps in the urethral motion that in turn pushes the wastewater away from the kidneys.
  • It constantly works for the discharge of urine and emptying the urine into the urinary bladder every 10 to 15 seconds.
  • In males, it prevents the liquid from passing back to the urethra and helps in the ejection of semen.

There are different types of Ureteral problems that are either inherited or acquired due to illness or accidents. Whenever there is any kind of disruption in the passage of urine from the kidneys to the urinary bladder, disorders related to the Ureters arise. Some Ureteral disorders are as follows: 

  • Renal Inflammation: It is a well-known type of Ureteral disorder. It occurs if the urine does not come out of the kidney.
  • Urethra Inflammation: The inflammation in the urethra creates a kind of blockage that harms the kidney if it remains unattended. Some well-known examples of such obstructions are as follows:

Constrictions of Ureter

The size of the parts of the ureter is 3 mm. There are a total of three constrictions of the ureter. All these constrictions are the most prevalent locations of plaque blockage of the kidney. The three constrictions of the Ureter are as follows:

  • Ureters Pelvic Ureteric Junction (PUJ) and the Kidney Pelvic.
  • Ureter splits when it enters the pelvic area or passes across the superficial inguinal artery.
  • At Vesicoureteric Junction (VUJ), the ureter joins the pelvic membrane laterally.

The main difference between the Ureter and the Urethra is that the ureter connects the kidney to the urinary bladder whereas the urethra connects the urinary bladder to the body’s exterior. 

The difference between the Ureter and Urethra is as follows:

  • Ureter Inflammation: It causes blockage and ureteral abnormalities and harms the kidney if it remains unattended. Some of the well-known examples of obstructions are bruising, stones in the kidney, natural pebbles, etc. The symptoms of ureter inflammation include pain, change in the color of the urine, high blood pressure, etc.
  • Ureteral Blockage: The main reason behind the ureteral blockage is ureteral duplication. It is a kind of conduit that transports urine from the kidney to the bladder. Ureteral obstruction is a kind of blockage in one or both of the tubes i.e. ureters that carry the urine from the kidneys to the urinary bladder.
