A double displacement reaction, also known as a metathesis reaction, is a type of chemical reaction in which two reactants exchange ions to form two new compounds. This reaction typically occurs in an aqueous solution and involves the exchange of cations and anions between two ionic compounds. The reaction is represented as:

AB + CD → AD + CB

where A and B represent the cations of the two reactants, and C and D represent the anions of the two reactants.

An example of a double displacement reaction is the reaction between aqueous solutions of sodium chloride and silver nitrate:

NaCl (aq) + AgNO3 (aq) → NaNO3 (aq) + AgCl (s)

In this reaction, the cation of sodium chloride (Na+) exchanges with the cation of silver nitrate (Ag+) to form two new ionic compounds, sodium nitrate and silver chloride.
