BOD stands for Biological Oxygen Demand. It is a measure of the amount of oxygen required by microorganisms to decompose organic matter present in a water sample.

  • The BOD test is used to determine the quality of water and the degree of organic pollution in it.
  • It provides an estimate of the amount of oxygen that would be consumed by microbes if the water sample were allowed to stand for a specified period of time.
  • A higher BOD indicates higher levels of organic pollution and a lower concentration of dissolved oxygen, which can have negative effects on aquatic life.
  • Therefore, the full form of BOD is Biological Oxygen Demand.
