The Ohio State University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Ohio State’s Graduate School sets minimum eligibility standards, and individual departments apply higher thresholds for their most competitive MS and PhD programs.
PG Requirements
- Academic: Four-year bachelor’s degree with cumulative GPA 3.0 on 4.0 scale (roughly 65% or CGPA 6.5/10); a three-year Indian bachelor’s alone is not accepted; add a two-year master’s or a one-to-two-year postgraduate diploma
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 79 (0-120 legacy scale) or 4.0 (1-6 new scale) / IELTS Academic 6.5 / Duolingo English Test 120; PTE is not accepted; My Best TOEFL Scores and IELTS One Skill Retake scores are not accepted
- Credential verification: Upload official transcripts and proof of degree at application; departments may require external evaluation (WES) after admission
- Test scores: GRE is not required for CSE MS and PhD; MBA applicants may submit GMAT or GRE, both waived on a case-by-case basis
UG Requirements
- Academic: Completed Class 12 with strong marks (typically 80% and above for competitive majors) plus predicted or actual SAT or ACT scores in the middle-50% band
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 79 / IELTS Academic 6.5 / Duolingo 120
Key insight: Indian applicants with three-year bachelor’s degrees such as BCom or BA are the single largest group turned away at document review; a two-year Indian master’s or a one-year PG diploma converts eligibility from ineligible to eligible.
The Ohio State University Acceptance Rate 2027
Ohio State does not publish a single graduate acceptance rate. The most recent undergraduate admissions cycle admitted about 53% (estimated) of applicants, with tighter out-of-state rates of 35% to 40%. Graduate acceptance rates vary widely by department, from below 10% in the Fisher Full-Time MBA to 30% or higher in select engineering master’s programs.
| Year | Acceptance Rate (UG) | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 53% (estimated) | Selective |
| 2024 | 60.6% (estimated) | Baseline |
| 2023 | 61% (estimated) | Broader access |
For Indian graduate applicants, the department-specific acceptance rate matters more than the university-wide figure. CSE MS admits roughly 15% to 25% of applicants (estimated), while the Fisher Full-Time MBA admits close to 30% (estimated) of a smaller applicant pool.
Reality check: The 53% headline acceptance rate is undergraduate-only; Indian MS applicants should assume 15% to 30% depending on department, and MBA applicants should apply in Round 1 or Round 2 for the strongest odds and merit funding review.

| Personal and utilities | 200 to 350 | 19,090 to 33,408 |
| Total monthly | 1,350 to 2,350 | 1.29 to 2.24 lakh |

Insider note: A shared house in the University District north of campus runs USD 700 to 900 per person; luxury student towers along High Street push past USD 1,400. Ohio State students ride COTA buses free with a BuckID, which cuts transport spend to near zero.
The Ohio State University Campus, Facilities and Student Life
The main Ohio State campus sits on 1,665 acres along the Olentangy River in Columbus, Ohio, and is one of the largest single-site public university campuses in the United States.
- Location and transport: Columbus is Ohio’s capital, a mid-sized tech-and-healthcare hub, with the free COTA bus pass and campus CABS shuttles connecting all 200-plus academic buildings
- Housing: On-campus housing is guaranteed only for first-year undergraduates; international graduate students typically live off-campus in the University District, with rents of USD 700 to 1,400 per month
- Standout facility: The Ohio Union and the RPAC (Recreational and Physical Activity Center) are among the largest student union and recreation complexes in US higher education
- Indian community: Ohio State hosts an active Indian Students Association plus multiple regional and language-specific groups covering Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Bengali cohorts
What Indian students say: Columbus is markedly more affordable than coastal US cities, the Indian grocery scene in Bethel Road covers most South and North Indian staples, and the campus feels welcoming rather than intimidating for first-time international students.
The Ohio State University Scholarships 2027
Ohio State runs a mix of departmental fellowships, graduate assistantships, and university-wide named scholarships. International graduate students are eligible for merit-based departmental funding and named scholarships administered through the Office of International Affairs but are not eligible for US federal aid.
| Scholarship | Type | Award Value | Eligibility | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fisher MBA Leadership Fellows | Full tuition + stipend | 100% tuition plus monthly stipend | Top Fisher Full-Time MBA admits | Auto-review with MBA application |
| Graduate Assistantship (GA/TA/RA) | Tuition + stipend | 50% tuition plus monthly stipend | Admitted MBA and departmental grad students | Verify at official page |
| Fisher Merit Scholarships | Partial tuition | USD 1,000 to full tuition | All admitted Fisher graduate students | Auto-review, priority to early rounds |
| Brian Chiou and Chiou Family Hope Scholarship | Named scholarship | Verify at official page | International graduate students | Verify at official page |
| International Student Grant | Grant | Verify at official page | Demonstrated financial need, within two semesters of graduation | Rolling |
[Source: Ohio State Office of International Affairs; Fisher College of Business]
Planning note: Fisher Full-Time MBA admits are auto-considered for merit funding, but the Leadership Fellows and 50% tuition awards go disproportionately to applicants who submit in the Early Round or Round 1; Indian applicants who wait for Round 3 or Round 4 rarely receive the top awards.

The Ohio State University Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
Ohio State reports strong post-graduation outcomes for its master’s cohorts, particularly in STEM and business analytics tracks feeding into US technology and healthcare employers.
- Fisher Full-Time MBA median base salary: USD 130,000 (INR 124.1 lakh) plus signing bonuses (as per Fisher employment report)
- MS STEM starting salary (US market median): USD 85,000 to 105,000 (INR 81.1 to 100.2 lakh)
- Top recruiters: JPMorgan Chase, Amazon, Nationwide Insurance, Cardinal Health, Honda R&D, Battelle, and other Columbus-headquartered employers
- OPT and STEM extension: All Ohio State STEM-designated MS degrees qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving Indian graduates 36 months of US work authorization
- Careers support: Fisher Office of Career Management runs employer treks; the university-wide Buckeye Careers office supports MS graduates across colleges
Insider note: Columbus is a Fortune 500 employer cluster (JPMorgan, Nationwide, Cardinal Health, Huntington Bank), which means Indian STEM graduates find local sponsors more readily than in smaller Midwest college towns, and H-1B conversion rates for Ohio State MS alumni run above the US Midwest average.
The Ohio State University vs Peer Universities
Indian applicants typically compare Ohio State against Big Ten peers and other public research universities in the US Midwest before shortlisting.
| University | QS Rank 2027 | Avg Annual PG Fee (USD / INR lakh) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Ohio State University | #201 | 42,000 / 40.1 lakh | Fortune 500 employer density in Columbus |
| University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign | #77 | 50,000 / 47.7 lakh (estimated) | Stronger CS ranking, higher fees |
| Purdue University | #89 | 45,000 / 42.9 lakh (estimated) | Larger Indian cohort, engineering-heavy |
| Pennsylvania State University | #94 | 44,000 / 42.0 lakh (estimated) | Broader research base, similar tuition |
| Michigan State University | #146 | 40,000 / 38.2 lakh (estimated) | Lower cost, weaker global rank |
| University of Minnesota Twin Cities | #127 | 43,000 / 41.0 lakh (estimated) | Comparable rank, colder climate |
Ohio State’s edge over similarly ranked Big Ten peers is the concentration of Columbus-based Fortune 500 headquarters within campus commuting distance. On raw QS ranking it sits behind Illinois, Purdue, and Penn State, but its tuition is roughly USD 3,000 to 8,000 lower per year than each of those.
The Ohio State University suits Indian applicants targeting a STEM-designated MS or a two-year Fisher MBA with a total investment of USD 130,000 to 150,000 (INR 124.1 to 143.2 lakh) against a US median starting salary of USD 85,000 to 130,000 (INR 81.1 to 124.1 lakh). The single strongest Indian-specific advantage is the 36-month OPT window on STEM degrees combined with Columbus’s Fortune 500 employer cluster, which produces one of the higher study in USA H-1B conversion rates in the Midwest.
It is not the right fit for applicants targeting a top-30 QS-ranked engineering programme or those who want a compact one-year MS with lower total tuition; those candidates should compare Purdue or the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign as realistic named alternatives.
The Ohio State University FAQs
Ques. Can Indian students with a three-year bachelor’s apply to Ohio State?
Ans. Ohio State’s Graduate School does not accept a standalone three-year Indian bachelor’s degree. Applicants must add a two-year Indian master’s degree or a one-to-two-year postgraduate diploma to become eligible. A three-year BCom plus recognised professional certification from Indian accounting institutes is also accepted for select programs, so applicants should confirm with the target department before submitting the application.
Ques. Does Ohio State accept PTE for graduate admission?
Ans. No. Ohio State’s Graduate School accepts TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic, and the Duolingo English Test for international graduate applicants. PTE Academic is not listed as an accepted test. Indian applicants who have taken only PTE will need to sit for TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic, or Duolingo before the application deadline. Some Fisher graduate programs accept only TOEFL and IELTS rather than Duolingo.
Ques. How long can Indian graduates work in the US after Ohio State?
Ans. All Ohio State MS and PhD degrees in computer science, engineering, and analytics carry STEM designation. Indian graduates receive the standard 12-month OPT plus a 24-month STEM OPT extension, for a total of 36 months of US work authorisation. Non-STEM MS graduates in fields such as public policy receive only the 12-month OPT window.
Ques. Are Fisher MBA scholarships available to Indian applicants?
Ans. Yes. Fisher Full-Time MBA applicants are automatically reviewed for merit-based funding. About 75% of admitted students receive some form of merit scholarship, graduate assistantship, or Leadership Fellowship. Priority is given to Early Round and Round 1 applicants; Indian candidates who submit in Round 3 or Round 4 rarely receive full-tuition awards.
Ques. What is the application fee for Ohio State graduate admission?
Ans. The graduate application fee is USD 70 (INR 6,682) for most programs, non-refundable. Some professional programs including the Fisher Full-Time MBA charge a higher application fee of USD 100 (INR 9,545). Fee waivers are limited and typically require documented US-based financial hardship, which most Indian applicants applying from India will not qualify for.
Ques. Does Ohio State offer part-time work to international students on campus?
Ans. Yes. F-1 visa holders can work up to 20 hours per week on campus during the academic term and full-time during breaks. Common roles include Graduate Teaching Associate, Graduate Research Associate, and Graduate Administrative Associate positions, some of which carry tuition remission plus a monthly stipend. On-campus retail and library roles pay USD 12 to 16 per hour.
Ques. Which Indian banks recognise Ohio State for education loans?
Ans. Ohio State is recognised on the education loan lists of SBI Global Ed-Vantage, HDFC Credila, ICICI Bank, Bank of Baroda, and Axis Bank. Non-collateral loans up to INR 50 lakh and collateral-backed loans up to INR 1.5 crore are commonly approved for Ohio State MS and MBA admits, subject to co-applicant income and credit history checks.
Ques. Does Ohio State require GRE for MS admission?
Ans. No. The Department of Computer Science and Engineering has confirmed that GRE is not required for MS or PhD admission. Most engineering master’s programs at Ohio State have moved to GRE-optional or GRE-not-required policies. Fisher MBA applicants may submit either GMAT or GRE; both are waived on a case-by-case basis for applicants with strong quantitative academic records.

Campus Life
- OSU believes deeply in being inclusive of all cultures so we had a lot of cultural activities. I wouldn't necessarily call them fests but it was a sizeable gathering. We had holi and diwali celebration for indians.
- There were other cultural festivals being celebrated too. I can't remember their names but I remember eating a lot of new kinds of food at Union, which is like a front desk building to OSU. Most of the information you need is at Union.
Fees
- $22k per semester for tuition. Although in the last semester, if you only need less than 8 credits to finish your master's, then you may be able to opt in for a reduced course load, which sees you pay per-credit fees up to 7 credits. I don't remember the exact number but I think it was $2500 (maybe) per credit.
- I only had 3 credits to finish in the last semester, which saw me pay only $9k in the last semester. Students can choose to stay off campus, which isn't too far and commuting is easy. A reasonable monthly budget could be around $1200 (not counting in any extra luxuries). $400-500 for rent. $200 for monthly groceries. $100 for Wi-Fi, electricity, etc. $400 for any extra miscellaneous expenses.
Likes
- The professors were dedicated to teaching, and experienced in their fields.
- You could always find bright students who were also dedicated to their studies and career advancement.
Dislikes
- The administration seems unstable, likely due to the continued involvement of Les Wexner.
- As a slight gym rat, there will never be enough equipment with the number of students we have.
Overview
I chose this university because of multiple factors: - I live close to the university - Decent rankings in my program - High abundance of extracurriculars - Large alumuni base It was a great overall experience. It had very friendly communities and the academics were solid.
Campus Life
I participated in about four business-related clubs. Libraries were very good, with Thompson Library being one of the best in the country. The RPAC (main gym) is also one of the largest collegiate gyms in the country, with other gyms available too.
Overview
My experience so far is very good. tOSU offers cultural inclusion and people are very accepting here. You get plenty of activities and extracurricular activities along with excellent academics. The campus is very pretty with a lake and a river going around the campus.
Campus Life
Life at OSU is fun. The clubs are very active and they host tons of events to participate in. OSU has one of the biggest recreational centers in the country and offers many classes. Libraries are one of the best parts of OSU, they got around nine libraries on campus and I never had any issues finding any books or document there. Wifi is available everywhere on campus.
Overview
I chose this university because the academic pressure that is demanded from the university is suitable for me.
Fees
7,500 USD
Overview
I chose this college because it is close to home and it was also the most affordable. Thanks to in-state tuition and FAFSA o was able to not be in so much debt but also the school is a good school that's hard to get into and had a good program
Fees
The fees were for books and for extra hours and classes. There were so many hidden fees it was definitely a surprise because there was always a new fee.
Overview
The program they offer is the best in the country and the best school in Ohio that is offered for my program. They aren't affordable and close to my hometown. They have the best professors, advisors, and programs.
Fees
I had to pay tuition, room, and board as well as down payments and reservation fees on where I lived. I also had to pay for a meal plan and pay to print off the paper at the university printers.
