Master of Arts (MA) in Gender Studies is a postgraduate degree program offered by a handful of universities in India. The scope for Gender Studies is still in its embryonic state in our country but it is a promising field of study in the many years to come. This course is a Social Science course and deals with the studies of Women, Men, Lesbians, Gays, Transgender and Bisexuals.
Students with a Bachelor degree in any stream are eligible for admission to this course. The course is of two years duration with a total of four semesters. The average tuition fee for the course ranges from 50,000 INR to 2 Lakh INRfor two years.
This is a very unconventional course and the job prospects after this course are usually in the educational field, NGOs, social works, UNO. Some of the other job profiles are in the field of consultancy, health care sector, counseling, public relations and publishing and editorial works.
The course deals with the gender identity and gender representations of various genders in the patriarchal society. It also focuses on the study of sexuality as an integral part of discovering a person’s identity in the world.
The course is a study of the various gender defined roles for all the genders and how it shapes the psyche of the people and their interpretations of these social and cultural constructions through various theories given by the social scientists. It is an interdisciplinary course which draws the gendered analysis from various fields of social sciences, humanities, literature, media and the cultural representations of the sort.
The course is beneficial as the increasing debate about gender conditioning is affecting all the spheres of the society, be it reservation for women in any government organization, the increasing crimes on LGBTs and women in general and the important aspect of representation of the gender in the media.

The minimum eligibility for admission to the course is a graduate degree from any recognized university in any discipline. The minimum percentage varies through universities ranging between 45-50% aggregate.
Usually, the admission forms are available online in the month of May and June. The admission process for getting admission in the MA Gender Studies is a two phase process. The first phase is when a student is shortlisted on the basis of their academic scores.
Universities like Ambedkar University conduct an entrance test followed by a personal interview for admission to the program.
The selection process of the university to grant admission to any candidate to the course is through their performance in the entrance test and personal interview conducted by the university.
The interview is conducted to test a candidate’s communication skills and their ability to comprehend issues related to gender identity.
The salary of an MA in Gender Studies graduate depends upon the profile held. Though the remuneration at beginning is low, it gradually increases with experience in the respective field.
