Traits can be defined as the observable and unique features of an organism. Traits are influenced by the genes and the environment, as well as interactions between them. The genotype is the genetic contribution to a characteristic. The phenotype is the genotype's outward expression. Acquired traits are those characteristics that a person acquires during the course of his life. These are not handed on through the generations. Inherited traits, on the other hand, are present in a person since birth and are passed down from generation to generation. Acquired traits can be knowledge, ideas, skills, weight, etc whereas hair and eye colour, muscle and bone structure, nose shape, etc are inherited traits.

Traits are the distinguishing characteristics of a person. For instance, their blood type or hair colour. Genes, as well as interactions between genes and the environment, have a role in phenotyping. Genes are set as the signal transmitter in our DNA that define our individual personalities, so keep that in mind. A phenotype, as a consequence, is the physical manifestation of a DNA-coded gene. The terms "phenotype" and "trait" are occasionally used interchangeably, while "phenotype" can also refer to a collection of traits.

What are Acquired Traits?

A characteristic or trait that develops a phenotype as a result of environmental impact is known as an acquired trait. Because acquired features aren't encoded in a person's DNA, most scientists assume they can't be handed down to offspring during reproduction. A characteristic or trait must be part of an individual's genotype in order for it to be passed down to the next generation. That is, it is ingrained in their DNA.

A non-heritable alteration in a living organism's function or structure that occurs after birth as a result of disease, injury, accident, abuse, or other environmental influences. Acquired traits and acquired characteristics are the same things. They are not passed on through the generations.

Acquired features can take numerous forms and have varying degrees of visibility, but they all have one thing in common: they are all changes. They alter a function or structure of a living creature after birth.

Darwin, Lamarck and Acquired Traits

Jean-Baptiste Lamarck made the mistake of supposing that acquired features might be passed on from parents to children, making the offspring more adapted to their environment or stronger in some way. 

This theory was present in Charles Darwin's first publication of his Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection initially, however, it was later removed after further evidence emerged that acquired qualities were not passed down from generation to generation.

A bodybuilder's offspring with extraordinarily massive muscles would be an example of an acquired characteristic. Lamarck believed that the offspring will be born with the same size muscles as their parents. The larger muscles, on the other hand, were not handed down to the children because they were an acquired trait as a result of years of training and environmental effects.

These are the characteristics that are passed on from parents to their children. Humans have inherited features such as hair, skin, eye colour, body shape, height, and susceptibility to certain diseases. An individual's hereditary qualities are defined by their genes.

Around 25,000 to 35,000 genes are found in a single human cell. The features that a person receives from his parents are encoded in these genes.

In his work with the pea plant, Gregor Mendel popularised the concept of hereditary features. He defines dominant characteristics as those that are visible in the phenotypic, whereas recessive traits are those that aren't.

To explain hereditary features, Mendel used the following inheritance laws:

  • Law of Dominance: When two alternate types of character are present in an individual, only one exhibits itself in the F1 progeny and is referred to as the dominant trait, The recessive characteristic is the opposite of the dominant trait.
  • Law of Segregation: The alleles exhibit no mixing and are recovered as such in the F2 generation, despite one of them not being present in the F1 generation.
  • Law of Independent Assortment: When two pairs of traits are recombined, the segregation of one pair of characters during gamete production is independent of the other pairs of characters.

A recent scientific study, on the other hand, reveals that Lamarck was not wholly wrong. Roundworms that gained resistance to a specific virus passed that protection down to their offspring for several generations, according to Columbia University Medical Center researchers.

  • Self-pollination was used to test this by getting both the parental and F1 tall plants to reproduce.

  • It was discovered that both tallness and shortness are hereditary qualities, but only tallness is exhibited.
  • As a result, Mendel suggested that traits-controlling genes exist in sexually reproducing organisms.
  • This reproduction is determined by the parents and can be either unique or identical.
