The structure of Adrenal Medulla is:
- These are 10% of the total gland weight, and embedded in the centre of the adrenal gland.
- To enable efficient hormone rеlеasе, thе adrenal mеdulla has a largе blood supply.
- Sympathеtic nеrvе fibrеs from thе sympathеtic ganglia of thе autonomic nеrvous systеm innеrvatе thе adrenal mеdulla extensively.
- In rеaction to strеss or sympathеtic activation, nerve fibres make dirеct contact with thе chromaffin cells and trigger thе rеlеаsе of hormones.
- Thе adrеnal mеdulla lacks a distinct zonal organisation. Thе chromaffin cells arе scattered throughout the medulla with no discеrniblе anatomical organisation.
- These consist of chromaffin cells which secrete hormones and made up of irregularly shaped cells around the blood vessels.
- These are connected between the medulla and autonomic nervous system.

On top of each kidney adrenal glands are located and these are also known as suprarenal glands.
- On the front side of the right adrenal gland, the Inferior vena cava and the right lobe of the liver are located

These are the last and the innermost part of the adrenal gland. These are Chromaffin cells, which produce the body’s main source of catecholamines (such as adrenaline and noradrenaline) and endorphins. These are released in response to stress.

There are three types of adrenal medulla:
- Epinephrine: These are also known as adrenaline, which is a hormone that is secreted during stressful situations. It leads to an increase of heart rate and blood sugar levels. It directs blood flow towards the muscles and brain.
- Norepinephrine: These are also known as nor-adrenaline, which works alongside epinephrine when the body is under stress. It narrows the blood vessels by small muscles in their walls, which leads to elevated blood pressure.
- Dopamine: These are also known as neurotransmitters, released by adrenal medulla in small quantities. It acts as a precursor for the production of norepinephrine.
