Class 11 Biology Chapter 20 Locomotion and Movement: Important Topics

Locomotion in biology pertains to the various movements of organisms (single-celled or multicellular organisms) to propel themselves from one place to another. In multicellular animals, these movements include walking, running, jumping, crawling, climbing, swimming, flying, galloping, slithering, and so on.

  • Types of Movement

Evolution, over the years, has developed many forms of locomotion and movement. For instance, prehistoric squid-like creatures called ammonites used jet propulsion to move around in the ancient seas. Snails use adhesive locomotion, where it slowly contracts and relaxes their muscular foot, propelling them along a layer of mucus. Whereas, humans are bipedal, meaning that they use their hind limbs for locomotion. However, this form of locomotion is not very common in the animal kingdom other than in primates.
