Ocean thermal energy is the process of generating electricity from the thermal differences occurring in oceanic surfaces. This is also known as Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC).

OTEC or Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion is harnessed by the temperature difference between the deep ocean water and ocean surface water. The process by which Ocean thermal energy is harnessed is given below.

  • The warm surface water with the fluid is pumped with the use of an evaporator. This vapourised fluid is used for driving the generator or turbine.
  • It then turns back into liquid form in a condenser and gets cooled with the ocean water under the deeper level.
