A tumor is an abnormal tissue mass resulting from unusual cell division. It is a solid mass of tissue which develops when abnormal cells start grouping together. Tumors can affect tissues organs, bones, skin and also, glands. Tumors can be divided into three categories:

  • Benign Tumor
  • Malignant Tumor
  • Pre-malignant Tumor

This means that it is either cancerous or non-cancerous. In each case, tumors require treatment. However, swelling is different from inflammation. It is also called Neoplasm.

What is a Tumor?

A tumor can be defined as:

“An abnormal mass of tissue that results when cells divide more than they should or do not die when they should.”
  • Tumors, also called tumor cells, are caused by abnormal or uncontrolled cell growth in organs, membrane or skin.
  • The cells in tumors are abnormal in appearance since they grow at an abnormal pace. 
  • An uncertain mutation in genetic structure is one of the reasons why Tumors are caused. 
  • Tumors may develop as a result of immune system abnormalities as well.
  • While some tumors are cancerous, some of them are not. 
  • Metastasis is a term that determines the stages of a Tumor. It basically refers to tumor stages and how it tends to expand. 

Difference between Tumor and Cyst

The difference between a Tumor and Cyst can be shown as:

Cyst

A cyst is:

  • A sac or lump filled with fluid, air, or any other substance. 
  • Any area of the body, including the bones, organs, and skin tissues, might show it.
  • Although benign non-cancerous cysts are quite frequent, it is best to have them examined because sometimes they can be cancerous. 

Tumor

A tumor, however, is more severe. 

  • When cells do not die when they should or when they develop and divide more frequently than they should, a mass of tissue is called a tumor. 
  • Tumors can develop nearly everywhere in the body and range in size from a tiny nodule to a sizable mass, depending on the form.

Tumors are of three types. Which are:

Benign Tumor

A benign tumor penetrates other parts of the body and grows slowly, sometimes reaching quite a large size, but it stays confined to the area where it first formed.

  • This does not indicate that benign tumors are always unproblematic. 
  • Some benign tumors can be fatal and damaging, such as brain tumors. 
  • Because of the pressure of the brain against the hard skull, a brain tumor may result in death. 
  • Benign tumors might also turn cancerous, which is known as malignant tumors. 
  • Intestinal polyps, for example, are considered benign precancerous tumors and must be removed to keep them from developing into malignant tumors. 
  • Once removed, benign tumors often don't return, but if they do, it's typically in the same location. 
  • The treatment of this type of tumor involves invasive procedures such as surgery. 

Even benign tumor have their types. One of the categories of benign tumors is Mixed Tumors. An example of the same is Pleomorphic adenoma. Some of the other types are listed below:

Malignant Tumor

Malignant refers to a tumor's ability to penetrate adjacent tissues and its composition of cancerous cells. Some cancer cells can migrate to different tissues within the body by moving into the bloodstream or lymph nodes. This is known as metastasis.

  • The breast, lungs, intestines, reproductive organs, blood, and skin are just a few of the bodily parts malignant tumors can develop.
  • For instance, if breast cancer is not detected and treated early enough, it may spread to the lymph nodes in the armpit.
  • Breast cancer starts in the breast tissue. 
  • When breast cancer has gone to the lymph nodes, it can then spread to other organs including the liver or bones
  • When this happens, secondary tumors, also known as tumors created by breast cancer cells, might develop there. 
  • The earliest biopsy of breast cancer can show the symptoms of tumors. 

Malignant tumors have their own types. One of the categories of malignant tumors is Mixed Tumors. An example of the same is Malignant Mixed Salivary Tumor. Here are some of the other types:

Pre-Malignant Tumor

Premalignant tumors also referred to as precancerous, are abnormal cells that are not cancer but have the potential to turn into cancerous cells in the absence of treatment. 

These cells can take a while to get cancerous, even if some of them may have minor mutations that go away on their own.

Tumors can affect a person depending on their size and location, regardless of being benign or malignant. Malignant tumors have more severe effects due to their potential for fast and invasive growth. Below are a few physical symptoms of tumors:

  • Compression: Benign tumors often pose as a cosmetic problem. Some benign tumors, however, due to their critical location, have more serious consequences.
  • Mechanical Obstruction: Intestinal blockage can be caused by benign and malignant cancers of the digestive tract.
  • Tissue destruction: Malignant tumors, both primary and metastatic, invade and destroy vital structures.
  • Infarction, Ulceration, and Haemorrhage: Infarction, surface ulceration, and haemorrhage are more likely to occur in cancers than in cases including benign tumors. The bacterial secondary infection could develop in this case. Large tumors in mobile organs, such as ovarian tumors, are prone to torsion, which can result in stroke and bleeding.

Diagnosis of Tumor

When a tumor is close to the skin's surface, its abnormal growth can be felt. When an abnormality is discovered, the tumor's location is tested and then the tumor. 

Here, is a list of diagnoses based on the type, stage, and location of cancer in the tumor. If cancer is present, these diagnoses are used to determine the stage.

  • Computed Tomography: It is an imaging test used to locate the tumor's site, and a deep test scan is performed to measure the tumor's speed of growth.
  • Histopathology: Firstly the cells and tissues are collected to understand the level of malignancy and metastasis. To understand the development of the tumor and its level of malignancy, microscopic examinations of the cells and tissues are conducted. It is also the same as a biopsy.
  • Radiography test: It is a test where uses of X-ray or gamma rays are done to examine the abnormalities. It is a non-destructive method.
  • MRI: MRI creates images of the body's tissue areas, which can sometimes be difficult to see with other imaging techniques. MRI can determine whether a growth is a tumor or malignancy. With the use of its contrast dye, tumors in the brain and spinal cord can be found.

There are several risk factors of tumors. Here are some of the most common ones:

  • Cancerous cells can develop in lungs, breast, prostate, and colorectal, liver, cervix, oral cavity, and oesophagus.
  • Several factors predispose to the occurrence of cancers. These include age, sex, ethnic and geographic characteristics, environmental and cultural influences, and family and genetic factors.
  • Carcinoma in the uterine cervix, bronchus, skin, oral cavity, etc may progress to cancer and are thus premalignant conditions.
  • A few benign conditions may lead to cancer e.g. colorectal adenomas, and neurofibromatosis.
  • High levels of some hormones have a role in leading to cancer, e.g. hyperestrogenism associated with a higher risk of endometrial cancer, oral contraceptives in breast cancer, testosterone in prostate cancer, etc.

Here are some treatments used to treat tumors and cancer.

  • If it's a tumor, surgery can be used to remove it. The tumor is taken out of the affected area. The cells and tissues which are affected are marked and then removed. It should be done by being aware of the requirements and needs of the patient.
  • The malignant level is examined after the tumor has been removed. If the other areas have been impacted, radiotherapy and chemotherapy are advised.
  • In radiotherapy, High-powered energy beams are used. Another name for it is Radiation therapy.
  • Chemotherapy is also advised after it is tested positive for cancer. Drugs are given during chemotherapy to eliminate cancer cells. Sometimes it is given prior to the surgery to shrink the tumor.

Ques. Is there a vaccine for cancer? (5 marks)

Ans. As of today, there is no record of a vaccine for cancer. However, there are vaccines for certain viruses which actively cause cancer, including human papillomavirus (HPV) and hepatitis B.

HPV can be responsible to cause cancer. Thus, being vaccinated against it can potentially protect against the types of HPV which can further cause cervical, anal, throat, and penile cancers, among other forms of cancer as well. The HPV vaccine is known to protect against a variety of strains of virus which are responsible to cause cancers.

Similarly, the same can be known for the infection with the hepatitis B virus, that potentially is linked to liver cancer. Being vaccinated against hepatitis B can help decrease the risk for getting liver cancer. 

However, like HPV vaccine, the hepatitis B vaccine does not protect against liver cancer. It only gives protection against the virus which might cause liver cancer.
