Natural Selection is adaptation and modification of life forms. Members of a population are intrinsically varied, which means they differ in certain respects. Flexible traits increase survival and reproduction chances. These adaptive features are passed onto next generations. These attributes become more prevalent over time. Favourable qualities are passed down through generations as a result of natural selection. Natural selection can result in speciation, which occurs when one species gives birth to a new, separate species.

Evolution is a scientific concept primarily used by scientists to explain how species on the planet change in their features in order to better acclimate to changing environments. It is the gradual adaptation of inherited traits over a long period of time, typically generations. The process of evolution describes how the world came to be. It is often described as a result of multiple methods that cause biodiversity. One of them is natural selection or Darwinism.

Darwin's Theory of Evolution

Two reasons for evolution, as per Darwin's Theory of Evolution, are branching inheritance and natural selection. Weather, temperature, material availability, and other environmental conditions all had a significant impact on the process of evolution.

Assume a bacterial colony is developing in medium A. They eat, breed, and find themselves suitable for the medium A. Every microbe would die if the constitution of medium A was changed to B. Only a small percentage of those who can adapt to new conditions will remain in medium B. They gradually split up and become new species. The character of moderate filters the fittest here, signalling the start of evolution.

Inheritance is a further condition that can contribute to natural selection. Two organisms are fighting for the same resource. If one can amplify much quicker than the other, they will have an advantage. Thus, the inherited mutation in organisms’ aids in selection and evolution. In some words, the more you adjust to a changeable environment, the more likely it is that you will be chosen by nature.

The word "adaptation" comes from Latin words’ ad + aptus, which means "toward + fit." Adaptation Phenomenon is process through which groups of organisms develop in such a way that favourable traits become more prevalent, making them better fitted to their surroundings. On a larger scale, it's how anatomical, physiological, and behavioural traits that help animals survive and reproduce ("adaptations") emerge over time.

Mutations can result in either of three consequences: neutral, harmful, or helpful. Positive mutations may be infrequent and provide just a tiny benefit, but natural selection can raise their percentage in the species over many decades.

Natural selection is extraordinarily effective at getting these individually rare gains to accrue, even though the incidence of any single favourable mutation is extremely unlikely. Natural selection concentrates improbability.


Survival of Fittest Phenomenon

Survival of the Fittest is a phrase derived from Darwin's theory of Evolution. In this theory, he described the entire process and framework of natural selection and fittest purpose. Evaluating reproduction rate can dictate the outcome of this natural progression of fitness. According to Darwin, the phrase "survival of the fittest" means "survival of the type that will end up leaving the most replicas of itself in subsequent generations."

Survival of the fittest idea became prevalent in fifth season of British biologist Charles Darwin's "On the Origin of Species," which demonstrated that life forms better suited to their surroundings are the most efficacious in reproductive success. Survival of the fittest implies that the strongest will live and the weak will perish. The 'fittest' will triumph over the weaker, and they are the most fit to do so.

Importance of Natural Selection has been elaborated below:

  • Variations arise in the genotype, which is passable from generation to generation. It improves one's chances of surviving.
  • It results in the emergence of new species.
  • Over generations, it amplifies the beneficial mutations while eliminating the bad ones.
  • Genetic and morphological conditions are more adapted to the organisms.
  • Example: Natural selection can be seen in a setting where red worms and green worms coexist. The red worms are a favourite food of the birds. There will be more green worms and fewer red worms as a result of this. After a few generations, the green worm will be discovered, and there will be no red worms left.

Things to Remember

  • Natural selection does not prefer features that are stronger in some way. Instead, it emphasises features that are advantageous in a given environment (that is, traits that allow an entity successfully reproduce more productively than its contemporaries). 
  • Characteristics that are beneficial in one context may be destructive in another.
  • Natural selection requires some beginning material, and heritable variation is that material.
  • There would already be variation (discrepancies among organisms) for natural selection to act on a feature. Furthermore, the differences must be heritable, as determined by the DNA of the organisms.
  • Genetic mutation is the originator of novel gene variants that generate new heritable features like fur colours (changes in DNA sequence). 
  • Random mutations that are passed down to progeny usually happen in an organism's germ, or sperm and egg cell lineage. To increase variation, sexual replication "blends and matches" gene variations.

Ans. Natural Selection can generate following results:
  • Stabilizing selection occurs when both big and small individuals contribute fewer children to the group than the population's average build. This decreases variation while leaving the mean value unchanged. The rate of change is slow.
  • Directional selection occurs when persons of one excessive size generate more offspring than those of the other kind, leading to an increase in the population's average size. If this selection continues for several generations, a population-wide evolutionary tendency arises.
  • Selection that is disruptive: Natural selection favours the two extreme (opposite) qualities at the same time, resulting in two peaks in the trait distribution. It's a one-of-a-kind item.

Ans. The theory of Lamarckism is derived from the French naturalist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck (1744-1829). It suggests that animals develop features as a result of their use or lack of use throughout their lifetimes, rather than through hard-coded genetic alterations.

Giraffes expand their necks to develop them longer, according to Lamarckian concept. As a consequence of their parents' attempts, these animals' children would acquire longer necks.
