Class 12 Biology Chapter 15 Biodiversity and Conservation: Important Topics

Biodiversity conservation is referred to as the protection, upliftment, as well as management of biodiversity, deriving sustainable benefits for present and future generations. In other words, it is the protection and management of biodiversity in order to obtain resources for sustainable development. Biodiversity is the variability of life on earth, which can be conserved in the following ways: In-situ Conservation and Ex-situ Conservation.

Biodiversity conservation consists of three main objectives:

  • To preserve the diversity of species
  • Sustainable utilization of species and ecosystem
  • To maintain life-supporting systems and essential ecological processes
  • Loss of Biodiversity

Biodiversity loss is the decline or disappearance of biological diversity, or the local reduction or loss of species in a certain habitat, leading to the loss of biological diversity. The term biodiversity or biological diversity refers to the number of genes, species, and individual organisms within a given species within a defined geographic area, ranging from the smallest ecosystem to the global biosphere.
