Starch is an odourless, tasteless white material generated in the green leaves of plants as a reserve food supply from surplus glucose produced during photosynthesis. Plants also store starch as granules in chloroplasts and other organs such as roots, stems, seeds, tubers, and so on. Potatoes, corn, wheat, rice, cassava, and other starchy foods are just a few examples.

Test 1

Students can use this test to determine how much starch is in a potato.

Apparatus:

They will require certain equipment for this exam. The ingredients for the starch test are potatoes, a knife, a clean saucepan, and an iodine solution.

Procedure:

Peel and chop the potato into tiny pieces first. After that, add 2-3 drops of iodine solution to these little pieces and set them inside the clean pot. Then let the bowl alone for a few minutes to observe what happens.

Observation:

Furthermore, if the instructions are followed correctly, the iodine test for starch will reveal that the potato slices have formed a black-blue colour.

Any liquid food sample can be used to properly perform this basic starch test. 

Apparatus:

This test requires test tubes, a liquid food sample, and an iodine sample, among other things.

Procedure:

Pour around 10 mL of food sample into a clean test tube to begin. Add 4-5 drops of iodine solution to the liquid after that. 

Observation: 

Then wait to see whether it turns blue; if it does, that food item includes starch.

These starch food tests are easy, and kids may do them themselves.

Apparatus:

For this test, students will need a fresh green leaf, approximately 250mL of water, a boiling pot, and a test tube, as well as ethanol and iodine solution.

Procedure : 

Before inserting the leaf in the water, students should boil it for two minutes. Remove the leaf from the jar and place it in a 90 percent ethanol test tube. Before washing the leaves in cold water, boil this solution for 10 minutes. Then place this leaf and a few drops of iodine solution on a clean tile.

Observation:

If there is starch present, the result is a blue-black colour. If starch amylose is not present, the colour will stay orange or yellow. Starch, amylopectin, cellulose, or disaccharides like sucrose in sugar do not generate the colour.

Because the enzymes that catalyse the processes are denatured during the boiling process, all chemical reactions are halted. Heat, pH, and ionic concentration have all changed or eliminated active sites in denatured enzymes.

Because ethanol is an organic solvent, it removes chlorophyll from leaves.
