It was founded in 1835 by the British Government with the purpose to train the youth in the field of medical irrespective of creed and caste. The college has one of the oldest and biggest libraries in the Bengal with the total number of books is around 22,000, every day more than 800 books are issued by the library. In the year 2018, the total number of the National and International Journals subscribed are 19 and 18 respectively.

Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Kolkata

Originally built in 1707, it was named as Presidency Hospital, the first hospital of Calcutta. In 1957 the institute gets its original name, it is the Post Graduate Medical College in the  Eastern part of India. The institute offers postgraduate, undergraduate, and post-doctoral courses, paramedical courses, nursing courses, and specialist medical diplomas and degrees.

RG Kar Medical College and Hospital

The institute has been founded by a famous Nationalist doctor R.G. Kar. During British rule, the native doctors of India were discriminated against and humiliated by the British doctors. When Dr. R.G. Kar returned to India from the UK, he decided to open a non-official medical institute with 8 other doctors motivated by the same nationalist movement. In 1887 “Calcutta Medical School” was founded later in 1948 its name was changed to “R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital

The institute offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and postgraduate diploma medical courses. The college accepts students through NEET and NEET-PG exams.

Top Medical Colleges in West Bengal Accepting NEET UG Exam

NEET-UG is a national level exam for the entrance in Medical and Dental institutes. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) which comes under the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), India Government. Every year more than 15 lakh candidates register for the exam and the number of students is increasing every year.

  • It is conducted once a year in an offline mode having 3 sections Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
  • The total number of questions is 180 which needs to be done in 3 hours.
