  • IIT Kharagpur appears to be the best institution in terms of return on investment as the average salary drawn is 12.75 lakh vis-à-vis an average annual fee of a little above 14 lakhs.

  • The State Technical University – MAKAUT did not fare too well in terms of salary package offered to its students.

  • Students of all other private institutions have been able to get an average offer in the range of 3 lakhs to 3.6 lakhs as against an average annual investment in the rage of INR 45000 – INR 90000.

The majority of Engineering colleges in West Bengal admit students through the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination. IIT Kharagpur and NIT Durgapur, however, accepts students through only IIT-JEE.

IIT Kharagpur

Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur is the first of its kind in India and is consistently ranked among the top five engineering institutions across the country.

  • IIT Kharagpur was established in 1951 with eminent international faculty joining the ranks during its inception. At present, the institution has 40 academic units, 11500 students, and 650 faculty members.

  • The institute offers a 4-year UG program, 2-year PG program and also Integrated PG programs.

  • At the UG level, the institute has a total student strength of 2475 of which approximately 9% are female students. Out of the 2475 students, 889 received full tuition fee reimbursement from institutional funds. 

  • Every year, more than 250 companies recruit 1600+ students from IIT Kharagpur. For two consecutive years, the institution has been adjudged the best in India by QS Graduate Employability Rankings.

  • 10-15% of IIT Kharagpur graduates opt to pursue higher studies at premier institutions like the IIMs, MIT, Harvard, Columbia, UCB, etc.

National Institute of Technology, Durgapur

National Institute of Technology, Durgapur was originally set up in 1960 as one of eight Regional Engineering Colleges in India. The institute in its current avatar is a fully-funded premier Technological Institution under the MHRD-GOI offering UG, PG and research programs. Admission for the B. Tech degree is on the basis of State Rank/ All India Rank (AIR) of IIT JEE.

  • NIT Durgapur is the first institute in Eastern India to be selected as a Lead Institute under the Technical Education Quality Improvement Program (TEQIP) of the GOI funded by the World Bank. Further, GOI declared the institute an “Institute of National Importance” in 2007.

  • NIT Durgapur has a current student strength of 3889 as of 2019, of which 2931 students are pursuing undergraduate degrees. Of the total UG student base, 19% are female students. A total of 881 UG students received full tuition fee reimbursement from institutional funds.

  • As per records till June 2019, more than 100 companies had visited NIT Durgapur campus for recruitment making a total of 620 offers in all of which 106 were double offers. 514 of 734 eligible students were placed in this campus placement drive.

Institute of Engineering and Management Kolkata

IEM Kolkata is the top-ranked private college in the NIRF list of engineering colleges in the state of West Bengal. Established as the first self-financed engineering college of the state in 1989, IEM has since earned many accreditations and accolades. The institute, under the aegis of MAKAUT, admits students through WBJEE and JEE Main.

  • IEM offers 8 B. Tech Degrees with an annual intake limit of 720. The institute also offers M. Tech programs with an annual intake of 54 only.

  • As per NIRF 2020 data, IEM has 2852 UG students of which 18% are female students. Of the total UG students, 127 received total tuition fee reimbursement from institutional funds.

Engineering admissions in West Bengal are done primarily through West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE). However, IIT Kharagpur admits students through IIT JEE while NIT Durgapur accepts students through IIT JEE.

IIT JEE is the popular-most entrance exam in India for admissions into undergraduate engineering programs. Since 2019, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has been conducting the test nationally, two-times a year.

  • IIT JEE is being conducted in January and April, to give students a second chance to improve their scores and merit-standing.

  • Given that IIT JEE is held twice a year, it is a choice of the students to appear in both or either. In case a student appears for both tests, the best score of the two will be considered.

  • JEE Exam structure has gone through drastic change off late. A separate paper for B. Planning has been introduced.

  • In the AY 2018 - 19, NIT Durgapur had more than 100 companies making a total of 620 recruitment offers to 514 students.
