Birth Summary
Birth is the story of a young man named Andrew Manson who has recently graduated from medical school. Joe Morgan and his wife Christine are dear friends of Andrew. The story begins with a short insight into Andrew’s personal life and progresses onto the hardships faced by Joe Morgan and his wife during the delivery of their child being born to them after many years of marriage. The sequential events of the story are listed below:
- Andrew Mason enters into an argument with his girlfriend and the two of them disperse for the night.
- Andrew’s friend Joe awaits him in his house to seek his help for the delivery of his child.
- A midwife attends to Christine initially, who is portrayed to be a shrewd lady. After arriving at Joe’s, Andrew continues to be distracted by thoughts about people who have been betrayed in love.
- Andrew silently consoles himself and starts attending to his patient. The child is born after an hour-long struggle. However, it is lifeless.
- Manson is horrified by the unexpected event and has to now make the tough decision of either attending to the mother or trying to revive the child.
- Once the mother is stable, Andrew shifts his attention to the child. Andrew fails to identify this as a case of asphyxia wherein the child doesn't breathe due to a lack of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood.
- Despite the midwife’s advice, Andrew continues to use his medical tactics of rubbing the child with a towel first and then using his hands to slowly press his chest.
- After some time Andrew notices a slight yet difficult motion in the child’s chest which finally increases to a normal heartbeat and then the child begins to cry.
- Andrew is relieved and explains the entire event to his friend Joe later.
Birth is a story of how doctors use their medical knowledge in dire times to save the life of all their patients.
