Class 12 Biology Chapter 4 Reproductive Health: Important Topics

Reproductive health means human reproductive systems should be well during all the life stages which include emotional, behavioral, physical, and social well-being. Sexually transmitted diseases transferred during sexual intercourse might lead to unwanted pregnancies, in order to avoid this proper social awareness should be provided to society as a whole. The important topics are discussed below:

  • Amniocentesis

Amniocentesis is the process of prenatal testing that primarily diagnoses fetal infections, chromosomal abnormalities, and even sex determination. The whole process is performed on pregnant women with the primary target of prenatal diagnosis of chromosomal abnormalities and fetal infections and in some cases, sex determination of the fetus.

  • Contraception

Contraceptives are a way to prevent not only pregnancies but also sexually transmitted diseases. Study on contraception helps to spread awareness, which also helps to understand reproductive health in total along with its types and ways in which contraception can be made use.

  • Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Sexually transmitted diseases, also known as Venereal diseases, are infectious diseases transmitted through sexual contact. It is also referred to by the name reproductive tract infections (RTI). However, every STD is not sexually transmitted, they can even spread through non-sexual contact also. 

Some of the sexually transmitted diseases are:

  • Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)
  • Chlamydia.
  • Gonorrhea.
  • Hepatitis.
  • Herpes.
  • HIV/AIDS & STDs.
  • Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
  • Infant Mortality Rate

The infant mortality rate, also called IMR, refers to the number of deaths of infants out of every thousand children born. IMR is an important index in terms of measuring the improvement in the infant’s health and safety during and after birth.
