MAT 2019 Topper Tips by Ashish Patial

Updated On - September 12th 2019By - Mohit Sarohi

MAT 2018 Topper Ashish Patial secured 99.99 percentile in the exam. Despite being a working professional, he studied hard to crack the exams with high scores. He was working with Global SGS in Chandigarh. He did a diploma from Indo-Swiss center, CSIO, Chandigarh and then completed the AMIE course, equivalent to a BE degree from the Institution of Engineers. Ashish likes football and riding a bike.

Preparing for CAT ultimately helped him with MAT preparation. He didn’t make any excuses for the time shortage. Instead, he made it a point of covering up and study on weekends whenever he couldn’t study during weekdays.

Was this his first attempt at MAT?

Ashish was working with Global GSS, Chandigarh when he first decided to prepare for the management exam. He appeared for both, CAT and MAT, clearing both. He scored 98.5 percentile in the CAT exam and 99.99 percentile in the MAT exam with a perfect score of 800 out of 800.

What was his preparation strategy for MAT 2019?

“Despite facing the shortage of time, in the last two years, I studied way more than I studied in the last 22 years of my life. If I could not study on a particular day due to overwork and my busy schedule, I studied for 9-10 hours on holidays and weekends.”

He improved English by reading more and more. It ultimately helped him in increasing speed and improving vocabulary. “In the last two years, I studied way more than I studied in the last 22 years of my life. I guess, my hard work helped me crack the exam”, shared Ashish.

Mathematics was already his forte. So he further strengthened it. It is essential to know your strong points and use them to your advantage. Ashish was already good in maths but after preparation, the mathematics section changed the things. As per him, he excelled in the maths section in both CAT and MAT.

If I have to rate myself on a scale of 10 (before my preparation), I would say, I was 2-3 in English and 6-7 in maths. But after my preparations, I was 9-10 in maths and 6-7 in English. Ultimately, I checked my weaknesses and strengths accordingly, I made my plan.

Coaching Vs Self study? What helped him more?

Coaching is very helpful in preparation but only if you need guidance. If you are a self-motivated person, can do self-study and preparation, you may not need any coaching. Sincerely dedicated time and rigorous preparation will help you crack the exam, on your own.

To what extent did he find Mock Tests and Previous Years’ Question Papers useful?

For any competitive exam, it is important to be familiar with the exam pattern. Mock tests or Previous year’s Paper also gives you a rough idea about the time management and which questions to prioritize.

There’s a massive difference between strategizing and execution. But when you actually attempt a mock test, it explores the loophole in time management and prioritizing things. It's important to learn from mistakes.

Any particular strategy that he followed on the exam day?

Being a Football fan, Ashish played FIFA for the last days before the exam. He still gave 1-2 hours for revision and clearing doubts. It's important to find the right mode to relax while preparing for a competitive exam.

In the last months before the exam, he only revised. He made a plan and time-table for everything and worked accordingly. He took 10 days leave from the office just before the exam and worked really hard in that time span. “On the last day, in fact, I kept myself very relaxed and took things quite easily.” He didn't take any mocks on the day before the exam. The same strategy follows for every exam. It helps in increasing overall performance.
