Master of Business Administration [MBA] (Biotechnology) is a 2 year post-graduation course in Biotechnology where fundamental and advanced principles of both business and biotechnology converge to provide a greater understanding of the economics driving this emerging technology. Biotechnology is a science of making products using biological processes, organisms or systems for the betterment of mankind.
A person who is a graduate in the field of medicine or engineering is eligible for this course. Average fee for this course is approximately 5 to 17 lacs INR which may vary in different colleges. The average entry salary of a person holding this degree is between 3 to 14 lacs INR.
Though people going into this stream are very low, on the contrary it act as an advantage as there is a huge requirement of people in biotechnology. Some of the high paying jobs in the industry are Biotechnology Researcher, Analyst, Product Manager and R&D Executive.
The objective of this course is to create a mark in the field of biotechnology, by implementing expertise in designing innovative projects, for the better, faster and accurate techniques in the medical studies; thereby increasing the reputation of the organization. Since a good research in this field helps mankind, hence it could turn out to be a highly satisfactory job.
A person who has the ability to understand deep encore of biotechnology is fit for the course. Apart from this a person should have good analytical, critical and problem solving skills. An ability to understand complex biological processes along with their benefits and drawbacks can prove to be an added advantage for students willing to opt for MBA Biotechnology.
However it is good analytical, critical and problem solving skills that are mandatory. Apart from this, excellent IT and presentation skills also can make a huge difference.
The duration of MBA Biotechnology in full time mode is 2 years, which is divided into 4 semesters, while duration of part time or distance mode MBA Biotechnology varies from 1 year to 2 year.
However, many candidates have a misconception that IIMs provide a degree in MBA but that’s not the case. They provide a diploma degree in Management but due to their reputation, the degree is considered equivalent to an MBA degree.

A person who is a graduate in the field of medicine or engineering is eligible for this course. Although a person with some work experience (at least 24 months) with research in this field are always more preferable.
In order to get admission in MBA Biotechnology, students need to clear the entrance exam which is followed by a group discussion round and personal interview round. Many institutes like IIM, Faculty of Management Sciences accept CAT score.
CAT: Common Admission Test (CAT) is an entrance exam conducted for admission to MBA programs. The skills tested in this exam are quantitative ability, reasoning, reading comprehension and verbal and non-verbal communication, solving skills and data interpretation. This exam is carried out the month of November.
Universities like Symbiosis Institute of Management, Pune conduct their own entrance test known to be SNAP, which is a paper driven test. Apart from CAT, other exams through which students can get admitted to MBA colleges are CMAT, XAT, MAT, GMAT and NMAT.
After clearing the test, a candidate goes through further filtration processes like GD and PI (in most of the cases). Some institutes offer direct admission via management quota on the basis of academic and entrance exam performance. However they are likely to conduct GD and PI.
Many institutes offer distance education for candidates who have limited time and resources. Generally, students are provided with study material (manually mode or online) and assignments, which need to be submitted within a specified time period. The selection of a candidate depends on his/her performance in the entrance exam or subsequent rounds. The weightage of entrance test, GD/PI is 55-65% and 10-20% respectively.
