A resistance wire connected in a meter bridge’s left gap balances 10 ohm resistance in right gap, dividing the bridge wire by 3:2. Assuming length of resistance wire 1.5m, determine length of 1 ohm of the resistance wire?

Meter bridge is often also known as a slide wire bridge, which is an instrument that operates on the principle of the Wheatstone bridge. A meter bridge is used in determining a conductor’s unknown resistance as that of a Wheatstone Bridge.

Solution

As per the given question,
The bridge wire is divided in the ratio, R:S = 3:2
And, S = 10Ω

Thus, the ratio can also be depicted as,

⇒ \({{R} \over S} = {{3} \over 2}\)

Hence, R = \({{3} \over 2}\) \(\times\) 10Ω = 5

Thus, the length of 1 Ω wire according to the condition given above can be represented as,

⇒ l = \({{1.5} \over 1.5}\)

⇒ l = \({{1} \over 10}\)

= 0.1 m 

= 1.0 \(\times\) 10-1m

Thus, the length of the wire by the given condition is 1.0 x 10-1m.
