Pollution is very dangerous for our health as well as the environment. There are various methods for decreasing pollution and bioremediation is one of them. It is a method to degrade environmental contaminants or pollutants by the use of microorganisms. Temperature and soil are the affecting factors of bioremediation. This process is not so costly.

Bioremediation is a process in which we use microorganisms like fungi or bacteria to convert environmental contaminants or pollutants to less toxic forms. For example if, there is a place in which soil contains lots of ammonia (NH3) which is toxic in nature, we introduce any microorganism in that soil and which convert ammonia into nitrogen and hydrogen which is less toxic in nature, and this overall process is called bioremediation. The reaction which is used in this process of bioremediation is called a redox reaction.

Generally, Bioremediation has two methods one is aerobic, and the second is anaerobic. Both methods have their own advantages & disadvantages and both are cheaper. In Aerobic method, the bioremediation process is used in the presence of oxygen whereas in Anaerobic method, bioremediation is used in the absence of oxygen.

In Situ Bioremediation

In in-situ bioremediation, treatment of contaminant or pollutant material at that site. It involves the process of bioventing, biosparging and bioaugmentation. 

Ex Situ Bioremediation

In ex-situ bioremediation, treatment of contaminated material at another site. It involves the process of land farming, biopiles, bioreactors and composting.

Biostimulation

Biostimulation is the method of altering the environment to encourage the growth of microorganisms like bacteria and fungi. They are capable of bioremediation and this whole process can be accomplished by the addition of rate-limiting nutrients like phosphorus, nitrogen, oxygen, carbon etc & electron acceptors. Alternatively, in anaerobic conditions, remediation of halogenated pollutants can be accelerated by adding electron donors, allowing indigenous bacteria to utilise the halogenated pollutants as electron acceptors. 

Bioaugmentation

Bioaugmentation is a part of bioremediation that entails researching the local indigenous types to see if biostimulation is viable. If the indigenous microorganism like bacteria discovered in the place can metabolize the pollutants, more traditional test organisms will be introduced into the region to speed up the breakdown of the pollutants. It is the addition of increased archaea or bacterial cultures to improve toxin breakdown. It is a technique for removing byproducts from natural resources as well as potential contaminants from waste.

Intrinsic Bioremediation

Intrinsic bioremediation is a part of bioremediation in which the congenital abilities of microbes which come from natural sources to break down pollutants are managed without any technique to improve the process. Due to the permanent properties of contaminants soil and water, the intrinsic bioremediation process is much more beneficial in these two biomes.

This process is natural and use only naturally occurring microorganisms like bacteria, fungi or plants to destroy substances that are harmful for the environment as well as human health.

Ans. In the process of bioremediation, microorganisms destroy or convert pollutants or contaminants into non toxic form. This begins from microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi. To start bioremediation, microorganisms need a perfect environment in which temperature, moisture availability, required pH value etc are all affecting factors in a comfortable zone. Then microbes secrete enzymes to break their food or contaminants and degrade into nutrients. This whole procedure is called bioremediation.

Ans. If only fungi microorganisms which are natural decomposers use in bioremediation then it is called mycoremediation. It is a combined form of mukesh & remedium where mukes means fungus & remedium means restoring balance. Mukes and remedium words come from Latin. Fungi use metabolic enzymes to degrade hard woody material or earth plants. To make their procedure easy, fungi break the larger hydrocarbon chain into small pieces. Fungi is use as like microbes when the condition is suitable for her and at the decomposing time of earth plant and hard woody material

Ans. Bioaugmentation, or the contamination of microorganisms like bacteria harbouring into soil to accelerate pollutant decay & has huge potential for bioremediation of organic-contaminated soils. It is a technique which is used to biodegrade specific pollutants in water and soil. It entails introducing cultured microorganisms like bacteria and fungi into the subsurface in order for them to break down easily the desired pollutants. In municipal wastewater treatment, it is frequently used to start up sludge culture system.

Ans. Following are the limitations of the bioremediation process.

  • Most of the plants are dependent on bioremediation.

Ans. 1. Bioventing process is used where contamination is deep below the surface in which air & nutrients are supplied in contaminated soil through wells or pipes so that growth of indigenous bacteria is stimulated.

  1. Biosparging process is used below the water table and in this we can inject air under pressure to increase concentration of groundwater so that we can better the rate of biological degradation. 
  2. Bioaugmentation process is used to enhance the performance of degradation process after importing microorganism in the contaminated site.

Ques 10. Explain the ex-situ process of bioremediation. (2 marks) 

Ans. In Land farming, first shift the contaminated soil from one place to spread over a well prepared bed and tilled time to time until the pollutant degrades. Biopiles is hybrid type land farming which convert land forming and composting into hybrid versions and treat contaminated waste after making engineered cells. Bioreactors in which we can process contaminated solid material like soil, sediment, sludge or water through an engineered contaminated system. Composting is the natural process of decomposing or recycling organic material into a rich soil.
