Variation simply means, any change that occurs within the cells, individuals, or group of any species due to a genetic difference or the influence of change in environmental conditions . Physical appearance, metabolism, fertility, mode of reproduction, behaviour, learning and mental aptitude, and other visible or measurable characteristics may all show variation. Genetic variation is a concept of genetic diversity among people in the world.

The genetic variation is a measure of the genetic differences that occur within the people. Genetic diversity refers to genetic variations as a whole society. Individual variances in DNA segments or genes are referred to the concept of genetic variation, and each variation of a gene is referred to as an allele. A population having many distinct alleles at a single chromosome site, for instance, has a lot of genetic diversity. Natural results can only raise or reduce the frequency of alleles that are already there in the population, hence genetic variation is important and necessary.

Causes of Genetic Variation

DNA mutation, gene flow (the transfer of genes from one group to another), and sexual reproduction are the main sources of genetic variation. Since Environmental conditions are inherently unpredictable, people with genetic diversity are better able to adapt to changing conditions than those without.

Mutation is a process of causing differences in DNA outcomes. These differences in gene sequences can be beneficial to an organism in some cases. Most genetic mutations result in features that are neither advantageous nor disadvantageous. By affecting genes and alleles in a population, mutations cause genetic variety. They may affect a single gene or a chromosome in its entirety.

Although mutations alter the genotype (genetic composition) of an organism, they do not always alter the phenotype.

Gene Flow: Also known as gene migration, gene flow occurs when organisms migrate to a new environment and introduce new genes into the population. The availability of novel alleles in the gene pool allows for new genetic variants. New creatures entering a community may aid organisms in adapting to changing environmental conditions. The loss of genetic diversity could come from organisms leaving a group.

Sexual reproduction promotes genetic diversity causing in diverse gene equations . Meiosis is the way of creating sex cells or gametes.Through meiosis, genetic equations occurs throughout crossing over or the exchanging of gene segments in homologous chromosomes.

Significance of Variation

Genetic variation is a significant evolutionary force because it allows natural selection to increase or reduce the frequency of alleles present there in the population. Genetic diversity benefits a society since it allows certain people to adapt to their surroundings while ensuring the population's survival.

Living beings grow in their population and survive on available resources in their niche by reproducing. Changes in DNA and body composition may make it harder for them to survive in their environment. However, we are aware that the environment is not consistent. It changes as a result of changes in several elements such as climate, temperature, resource availability, and so on. If a species is too stubborn to change during these environmental changes, it will not be able to live in that ecosystem. This is where variance comes into play. Species variations allow them to adapt to their environment and increase their chances of survival.

Thermophilic species, for example, are resistant to some environmental conditions. In high temperate zones, they have a better chance of surviving than others.

Variation helps certain individuals from the population to adapt to changing conditions. Since natural selection mainly has it's effects on phenotypes, more genetic diversity within a society mostly leads to more phenotypic diversity. New alleles improve an organism’s ability to survive and reproduce, ensuring that the allele persists on the earth. Other novel alleles, such as a defective oxygen-carrying protein, may have immediate harms, and organisms containing these mutations will die out. Neutral alleles aren’t selected for or against, thus they’re more likely to survive in the population. Genetic variety is beneficial because it allows certain individuals, and so populations, to survive in a changing environment.

Is it possible for organisms to replicate an exact copy of themselves

Every single life begins with a fundamental unit known as a cell. The cell has a nucleus, which houses the genetic information passed out for the upcoming generation as a form of DNA. DNA replication is the fundamental process of reproduction. When a replicating <a data-cke-saved-href=">cell divides, it first begins to replicate its DNA. This replication will be isolated from the original DNA.

As DNA cannot develop an organism on its own, the cell generates into two. We get a cell with new DNA. The proteins are produced in the new cell in accordance with the DNA codes. As a result, the cell develops into a new person that resembles the original cell. These two cells may have similar body shapes and physiology, but they are not same i.e "Identical".

Meiosis happens during the production of gametes. Due to crossing over and recombination, this eventually results in differences in DNA that differs from the parent cell. A change in the information on DNA indicates the beginning of variety. The altered DNA copy will code for proteins that are distinct from the original. Variation in the organism is caused by different proteins. The body designs that an organism inherited from its parent will no longer be taken into account. This change could be abrupt or gradual. Variation during reproduction is a natural tendency that paves the road for evolution.

Variation is restricted in an asexually reproducing organism. Organisms produce perfect replicas of themselves, known as clones. In a sexually reproducing species, however, the possibilities of variation are extremely great.

Things to Remember

  • Genetic variation is a significant evolutionary force because it enables natural selection to increase or reduce the frequency of alleles present there in the population.
  • Mutations, sexual reproduction and genes flow are all major causes of variation.
  • As new individuals with various gene combinations migrate into a group, they cause genetic variety.
  • In a population, sexual reproduction promotes various gene pairings, resulting in genetic variation.
  • Eye colour, blood type, animal camouflage, and plant leaf alteration are all examples of genetic variation.
  • Genetic variety benefits a population since it allows certain people to adapt to their surroundings while ensuring the population’s survival.

Sample Questions

Ques. What is capable of preserving genetic variation? (2 marks)

Ans. The genetic variation within a population is a measure of the genetic differences that exist. A species with a wide range rarely has the same genetic make-up across its entire range. Various forces will alter relative allele frequencies in different ways at each end of the distribution, which is one way that genetic variation can be retained in huge populations over various and comprehensive physical ranges.

Ques. What factors contribute the most to genetic variation? (2 marks)

Ans. Disparities between individuals can be referred to as genetic variety, as can differences across populations. The ultimate source of genetic variety is mutation, however factors such as sexual reproduction and genetic drift also contribute to it. Physical appearance, metabolism, fertility, mode of reproduction, behaviour, learning and mental aptitude, and other visible or measurable characteristics can all show variation.

Ques. What is the significance of genetic variation? (2 marks)

Ans. The genetic variation within a population is a measure of the genetic differences that exist. Genetic diversity refers to a species’s genetic variance as a whole.

In a group of organisms, genetic variation allows certain species to survive in their environment better than others. Even within a small population, organisms can differ dramatically in their suitability for life in a given environment.

Ques. Which of the following are three sources of genetic variation in a population? (2 marks)

Ans. Mutation, gene flow, and sexual reproduction are the three main sources of genetic variation. A mutation is merely a change in the DNA sequence. Mutations are uncommon and, in most cases, damaging to a population. As a result, mutations are typically picked against during evolutionary processes. The generation of novel alleles, changes in gene number or position, rapid reproduction, and sexual reproduction are the major contributors or sources of genetic variation.

Ques. State effects of the environment on genetic variation? (2 marks)

Ans. Even on a small scale, environmental influences can have a significant impact on both population size and intrapopulation genetic variation. On a broader level, a patchy environment combined with a low dispersal rate can lead to fine-scale patterns of genetic variation. In short, Genetic variation is important and beneficial as it allows certain individuals to survive in a changing environment.

Ques. Is it possible to control genes? (2 marks)

Ans. Cells can control which genes are transcribed and which transcripts are translated, and they can also biochemically convert transcripts and proteins to change their function. Regulation of transcription and translation occurs in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes, but it is substantially more varied in eukaryotes. Variations that are inherited (or hereditary) are handed down from parent to child and can be detected in practically every cell of the body throughout a person's life.

Ques. Is genetic diversity and genetic variation the same? (2 marks)

Ans. The term “genetic variation” refers to the diversity of gene frequencies. In other words The genetic variation within a population is a measure of the genetic differences that exist. Genetic diversity refers to a species’s genetic variance as a whole.

Disparities between individuals can be referred to as genetic variation, as can differences across populations. The ultimate source of genetic variety is mutation, however factors such as sexual reproduction and genetic drift also contribute to it.
