Class 12 Biology Chapter 9 Strategies for Enhancement in Food Production: Important Topics

Food is essential for the growth and survival of all the organisms in order to cater to the need of the enlarging population, due to which it is important to have food production. Single-cell Protein, Plant breeding, Biofortification, and modern technologies such as Micro Propagation, Mutation, and Mutagens have increased the yield in many ways. The important topics that are covered in this chapter are:

  • Single-Cell Protein

Single-cell proteins (SCP) are the dead and dry cells of microorganisms like yeast, bacteria, fungi, and algae. These microorganisms serve as a food or feed supplement, which can be an alternative to conventional protein sources. 

  • Fungi: Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillus niger, Rhizopus cyclopean
  • Yeast: Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Candida tropicalis, Candida utilis
  • Algae: Spirulina (spa), Chlorella pyrenoidosa, Chondrus crispus
  • Bacteria: Pseudomonas fluorescent, Lactobacillus, Bacillus megaterium
  • Green Revolution

The Green Revolution is a term that is used for rapid increases in wheat and rice yields in developing countries. This is done by improved varieties combined with the expanded use of fertilizers and other chemical inputs, which has had a dramatic impact on incomes and food supplies in many developing countries.

  • Biofortification

Biofortification is the idea of breeding crops in order to increase their nutritional value. This can be done either through conventional selective breeding or through genetic engineering.

  • Animal Husbandry

Animal husbandry is the branch of science that deals with the practice of breeding, farming, and caring for farm animals such as cattle, dogs, sheep, and horses by humans for advantage. Animal husbandry is referred to livestock raising and selective breeding
