Ultraviolet Light (UV light) is a type of electromagnetic radiation, which is invisible to the human eye. UV light has shorter wavelengths than visible light. The wavelength of ultraviolet rays can range from 10 nm to 400 nm and its frequency ranges from 8 x 1014 to 3 x 1016 Hz.

  • The Sun is a source of the full spectrum of ultraviolet radiation, and it consists of around 10% electromagnetic radiation coming from the sun.
  • UV rays are commonly subdivided into UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C.
  • The most harmful UV rays among them are UV-C rays which are almost completely absorbed by our atmosphere.

There are 3 types of UV light:

  1. UVA (Ultraviolet-A): UVA light is one of the two ultraviolet wavelengths with which the human body comes into contact most often within the atmosphere. They have longer wavelengths than the other two types. UVA rays penetrate deeper layers of skin because of their length. 
  2. UVB (Ultraviolet-B): This radiation is known to impact the human body through the atmosphere. Also, much of this radiation is absorbed by the ozone layer. It has a shorter wavelength and penetrates more superficial layers of the epidermis.
  3. UVC (Ultraviolet-C): UVC rays are absorbed by the ozone layer along with some of the UVB wavelengths. They have shorter wavelengths and aren’t known to have harmful effects because they can’t get past the earth’s ozone layer.

UV lights are those which are not visible to the naked eye. The lens of the human eye blocks most radiation in the wavelength range from 300-400 nm, shorter wavelengths are blocked by the cornea.

  • Human eyes also lack color receptors adaptations to UV rays.
  • However, the photoreceptors of the retina are sensitive to near-UV, and people who lack a lens perceive near-UV as whitish-blue or whitish-violet.
  • Near-UV radiation is visible to insects, some mammals, and some birds.

Hence, on one hand, UV light can be used as a treatment option for a variety of diseases, and at the same time, it can cause adverse health problems during prolonged exposure.

    3. These radiations do not cause ionization or charging of atoms.

We can limit the use of vehicles on the road to reduce ozone depletion. Automobiles release a considerable amount of greenhouse gases, which can contribute to global warming and ozone depletion. 

We can avoid the use of pesticides, these can be a great source for farmers to get rid of weeds and pests but they equally harm the ozone layer. To get rid of pests, eco-friendly insecticides will be used, or the weeds can be physically removed.

Most cleaning products include chlorine and bromine, which emit chemicals into the environment and harm the ozone layer. To protect the environment, they should be replaced with natural goods.
