    Bachelor of Hotel management or simply BHM is an undergraduate course which teaches students the various fundamentals of hotel management and catering technology. The course has no fixed duration. Some colleges offer it as a 3-year course while some offer it for 4 years duration. For students to be eligible for this course, they should have cleared their 10+2 with satisfactory marks.

    The admissions to BHM are done through both entrance tests and on the basis of merit. In both cases, personal interviews might follow.

    This course focuses on teaching students the very nuances of hotel management and the deep knowledge too. The course curriculum includes topics like Methods of Cooking, Food Commodities, Food and Beverage Services, Control Methods, Restaurant Planning, Oral Skills, Computer Applications, Hotel Accounting, etc. The average course fees range INR 3-8 Lakhs.

    The main recruiting industries for such students are hotels like Marriott, Accor, Hyatt, The Oberoi Group, Starwood Hotels, etc. Students get to work on profiles like Front Office Manager, Restaurant Manager, Housekeeping Manager, Food and Beverages Manager, etc.  The average starting salary is INR 2-5 Lakhs.

    BHM: What is it about?

    Bachelor of Hotel Management is an undergraduate course which introduces students to the fundamentals and different facets of the hospitality sector. The course is about the study of the hospitality industry as a whole, acquainting the student to the different sector and areas of this industry. Thus, it not only teaches students about the hotel management but also about marketing, sales, public relations to name a few other areas.

    Apart from being dedicated, sincere and hard working, a person wanting to enter the hospitality industry should also be outgoing with a pleasing personality, willingness to interact and gel with people and make them comfortable. Excellent communication skills and an aptitude for the current trends in hospitality is a must for candidates who wish to pursue BHM.

    BHM vs BBA in Hotel Management

    Whether it is BBA in Hotel Management or BA Hotel Management or B.Sc. Hotel Management, all of them are almost the same. But all these subjects collectively differ from BHM course.

    • While the rest of the courses are for a duration of 3 years, BHM is for both 3 years and 4 years according to the pattern of different universities.
    • While this group of courses focuses on hotel management as the chief subject, BHM’s main emphasis is on teaching students about the hospitality sector.

    BHM: Eligibility

    The basic eligibility for pursuing this course is that the students should have cleared their 10+2 exam from a good school. The school should be affiliated to a board recognized by the Indian government. They should also have obtained satisfactory marks, i.e., the minimum marks as mentioned by the universities individually. Different universities keep different criteria. The range varies from 55%-80%.

    BHM: Admission Process

    The admission process for the entry to this course varies from college to college. The forms begin to come from as early as December with the entrance tests scheduled from April to July for different institutes. Admission may be procured through an entrance exam, direct admission or lateral entry.

    Entrance Exam

    Institutes like GD Goenka School of Hospitality and Christ University conduct entrance test for admission to this program.

    Under Graduate Aptitude Test (UGAT) conducted by All India Management Association (AIMA) is one of the nationally conducted entrance tests for entry to BHM.

    UGAT test paper for admission to this course generally contains four sections and questions are asked from the following topics:

    • Numerical Ability
    • Language and Reading Comprehension
    • Logical Reasoning
    • General Knowledge

    In addition to these topics, students aspiring for admission in BHM program must also appear for an additional Service Aptitude and Scientific Aptitude section which contains 50 questions and is of 1-hour duration.

    Direct Admission

    Institutes such as Manipal University offer merit-based admission to the course and do not conduct an entrance test. Such universities invite application and then declare the list of selected candidates for admission within a fortnight or month of the last date of application.

    BHM: Lateral Entry

    Certain colleges offer admission through lateral entry. Manipal University’ s Welcomgroup Graduate School of Hotel Administration is one such institution. It provides admission directly in the second year (third semester) of the four year course if the candidate has a three year diploma in hotel management or equivalent after 10+2 or equivalent, with above 50% marks in aggregate.
