The basic eligibility for pursuing this course is that the students should have cleared their 10+2 exam from a good school. The school should be affiliated to a board recognized by the Indian government. They should also have obtained satisfactory marks, i.e., the minimum marks as mentioned by the universities individually. Different universities keep different criteria. The range varies from 55%-80%.
The admission process for the entry to this course varies from college to college. The forms begin to come from as early as December with the entrance tests scheduled from April to July for different institutes. Admission may be procured through an entrance exam, direct admission or lateral entry.

Under Graduate Aptitude Test (UGAT) conducted by All India Management Association (AIMA) is one of the nationally conducted entrance tests for entry to BHM.

In addition to these topics, students aspiring for admission in BHM program must also appear for an additional Service Aptitude and Scientific Aptitude section which contains 50 questions and is of 1-hour duration.
Institutes such as Manipal University offer merit-based admission to the course and do not conduct an entrance test. Such universities invite application and then declare the list of selected candidates for admission within a fortnight or month of the last date of application.
Certain colleges offer admission through lateral entry. Manipal University’ s Welcomgroup Graduate School of Hotel Administration is one such institution. It provides admission directly in the second year (third semester) of the four year course if the candidate has a three year diploma in hotel management or equivalent after 10+2 or equivalent, with above 50% marks in aggregate.
