Predators refers to those species who hunt and consume other creatures/organisms for gaining energy. They are an integral part of the food chain and maintaining the ecosystem. The food chain is controlled by animals and plants at various different levels. Predation is a biological process in which one creature, the predator, kills and consumes another, the prey.

Predators are predatory animals that hunt and eat other organisms for nourishment. Predators consume prey species, which are referred to as prey. Predators are typically classified as carnivorous or omnivorous. Predators include lions, tigers, sharks, and snakes.

Depending on their position in the food chain, predators may become prey to other species. A snake, for example, is a mouse's predator, but it's also an eagle's prey, as seen in the figure below.

A food chain is defined as a system in which a tiny animal provides food for a larger species, which in turn provides food for an even larger animal. The term "food chain" refers to the order in which animals rely on one another to meet their nutritional requirements. One or more food chains exist in every ecosystem or society. The majority of food chains start with autotrophs (organisms that produce their own food), then go on to primary consumers (herbivores), secondary consumers (carnivores and omnivores), tertiary consumers, and eventually decomposers.

In biology, predation is described as a connection between two species of organisms in which one acts as a predator and captures and feeds on the other, which functions as prey.

It describes the interdependent connection between two species, the prey and the predator, in which energy is transferred from one to the other. The predator is the creature that consumes the prey, while the prey is the organism that is consumed by the predator. The victim loses energy and health, whilst the predator reaps the benefits.

There are four different types of predators present on the Earth. These are given below:

Herbivores

Herbivores are animals that get all of their calories from plants and plant-based foods. In a food chain, herbivores are the major consumers. Cows, buffaloes, goats, sheep, deer, and other animals that eat plants and plant products fall under this group. This is also beneficial to the prey (in this example, the plants). Many herbivores, for example, spread the seeds of fruits as they travel. Those seeds sprout and eventually develop into a new plant.

Carnivores

A carnivore is an animal that eats meat as its primary source of nutrition, whether it originates from live or dead animals (scavenging). Even though their diets contain just a little amount of meat, several animals are classified as carnivores (e.g., parasitic arthropods such as spiders who only ingest tiny vertebrate prey). Plants are also used by certain carnivores to augment their diet. In the food chain, a carnivore can be a secondary or tertiary consumer. Carnivorous predators kill and eat their prey. Large creatures such as tigers and lions fall into this group.

Omnivores 

An omnivore is a creature that consumes both plant and animal matter in its diet. Plant and animal materials, such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, eggs, fish, and various meats, are part of their daily diet. In the wild, omnivorous creatures include bears, badgers, hedgehogs, skunks, sloths, squirrels, raccoons, chipmunks, rabbits, and rodents. Humans, chimps, and orangutans are all omnivores, as are other members of the Hominid family.

Parasites

These predators dwell inside the host's body and feed on its nutrients in order to survive and reproduce. The host loses energy as a result of this, although it is seldom killed, whereas the parasite benefits. This group includes roundworms, leeches, ticks, lice, and mites. All predators, regardless of their nature, are heterotrophs, meaning they rely on another organism for nourishment in order to survive.

To assault and catch their prey, predators adapt in the following ways:

  1. Predators employ camouflage to blend in with their prey and launch a surprise attack. This also protects them from any potentially harmful predator defense mechanisms.
  2. Sharp teeth, claws, thick skin, quicker speed, and higher strength are among the mechanical modifications that aid them in capturing prey.
  3. Venom, toxins, and poison are among the chemical adaptations used to kill prey. Chemical adaptations have also been developed to defend them against the prey's chemical defenses. Monarch butterflies, for example, dine on poisonous milkweed plants. They have developed to the point where they are unaffected by it.

Predators are generally categorized into two: Large and Small

Large Predators 

To destroy their prey, big predators have developed specific adaptations. Polar bears, killer whales, and great white sharks are just a few of the world's biggest predators.

Seals are the main food source for polar bears. Killer whales consume seals, sea lions, fish, and other marine mammals. Great white sharks are the deadliest predators in the water, feeding on nearly every creature.

Small Predators

Small predators don't inflict widespread devastation. Sea stars, for example, eat a variety of shellfish. Ladybugs are the tiniest predators that eat aphids. Lions, tigers, bears, wolves, leopards, dogs, snakes, and crocodiles are among the other predators.

The term "Food Web" refers to an ecosystem that has many such separate food chains. A food chain depicts a direct energy transfer between organisms. A food web is a much more realistic and simpler means of transmitting energy in an ecosystem since every creature may feed on numerous items.

Ans: Despite the fact that main consumers eat producers, they nonetheless obtain their energy from the sun. Plants are the principal consumers, and they break down the food particles to release energy. The producers and the plants on which they feed do not provide 100 percent of the sun's energy to primary consumers. This is due to the fact that plants only use a portion of the sun's energy to synthesize their nourishment. In reality, they only receive 10% of the total energy. This is known as the 10% Rule, which asserts that only 10% of available energy is transmitted down to the next level of users.

The great white shark is the ocean's most fearsome predator, devouring virtually all forms of life whereas small predators are rarely the perpetrators of mass murder. Sea stars, for example, eat a variety of shellfish species. The ladybug is the tiniest predator, feeding on plant-eating insects called aphids.
