    Test of English as a Foreign Language or TOEFL is an English language proficiency test and it is exclusively designed to assess the English skills of the candidates over the world. ETS has 14 TOEFL grants and awards for the qualified candidates. In this article, you will know more about TOEFL Scholarships. 

    Purpose Of TOEFL Scholarships

    Just like any other scholarships, the purpose of TOEFL scholarships is to provide helps to the candidates to pursue their higher education. Another purpose is to motivate the candidate to work hard and concentrate more to secure the highest possible score in TOEFL

    The categories of TOEFL grants and awards are: 

    • TOEFL Grants
    • TOEFL Young Students Series (YSS) Research Grants
    • TOEFL Awards (by application)
    • TOEFL Awards (by nomination)
    • TOEFL Award (applications reviewed by TESOL as part of conference proposal process)

    Eligibility Criteria And Components of TOEFL Scholarships

    As previously mentioned, there are 14 different awards and grants; it is quite natural that each of them will have different eligibility criteria. It is also true that each of these scholarships provides different facilities to the candidates.     English-language Researcher/Practitioner Grant Program

    • Award Components: US$5,000–$10,000
    • Eligibility Criteria: Candidates who are teaching English in middle school, high school or university

    The purpose of this grant is to enable the English practitioners to involve ETS's programs to promote learning English and support education and professional development. This grant also aims at knowing the experience of the practitioners in the classroom and getting more information about it. 

    Small Grants for Doctoral Research in Second or Foreign Language Assessment

    • Award Components: Up to US$2000
    • Eligibility Criteria: Graduate/postgraduate student registered in research or doctoral program with a specialization in foreign language assessment. 

    The purpose of this award is to provide a small amount of cash to the candidates so that they can complete their dissertation on time. Candidates who have completed all course and examination requirements for the degree, and have an approved proposal can apply for this award. 

    TOEFL® Committee of Examiners 2021 Research Program

    • Award Components: US$100,000
    • Eligibility Criteria: Faculty or staff who are affiliated in any nonprofit organizations and institutions. 

    With this award, ETS promotes high-quality language assessment research. A diverse and innovative research methodology is mandatory for this award. The current members of TOEFL COE and for-profit organizations are not eligible. 

    TOEFL® Young Students Series Research Program: Research Grants — 2021 Call for Proposals

    • Award Components: Up to US$50,000
    • Eligibility Criteria: Faculty or staff of nonprofit organizations across the world. Assessment research and expertization in English language learning are mandatory.

    Supporting the research related to TOEFL YSS assessments is the aim of this award. Along with this, it focuses on promoting high-quality language assessment.

    TOEFL® Young Students Series Research Program: Research Grants for Graduate Students — 2021 Call for Proposals

    • Award Components: Up to US$5,000
    • Eligibility Criteria: Graduate students to be enrolled in masters; and doctoral programs in any institution in either language testing or language education or applied linguistics.

    This award is meant to support research in TOEFL YSS assessments and foundational research with an aim at promoting high-quality language assessment in the same field. 

    Jacqueline Ross TOEFL® Dissertation Award

    • Award Components: US$2,500 
    • Eligibility Criteria: Candidates with an accepted dissertation, not more than 3 years before applying for this award. Research has to be completed by that time and it has to be related to any second language or foreign language test in the world. 

    This award recognizes doctoral dissertation research which has an original and significant contribution to foreign-language tests. This award along with the cash includes economy airfare and accommodations expenses for 3 nights at the Language Testing Research Colloquium. 

    Samuel J. Messick Memorial Lecture Award

    • Award Components: US$1,000
    • Eligibility Criteria: A presenter who with his/her associated topic can provide sufficient direction for significant innovations in any foreign language test design or interpretation or use with an emphasis on operational or conceptual insights

    This award aims at identifying a presenter who can deliver a major address at the joint annual meeting ILTA) and LTRC. The presentation will be of great potential relevance to the improvement of foreign or second language testing practices. This award also includes economy airfare, hotel accommodations, and all other charges for 3 nights at the conference. 

    TOEFL® Award for International Participation at TESOL

    • Award Components: $2,500
    • Eligibility Criteria: First-time presenters of the annual International (except the US and Canada) TESOL Convention with an approved proposal accepted for presentation there.

    The purpose of this award is to support those who attend the International TESOL Convention for the first time and increase international participation.
