On Shakespeare Summary
This sonnet-like poem is about Shakespeare- the greatest play-write of all time. This poem can be considered an epitaph for Shakespeare. It includes a heroic couplet that follows the iambic pentameter as its form.
- This poem begins with Milton questioning the need for a gravestone on Shakespeare’s grave.
- Milton believes Shakespeare’s name does not need a mere gravestone to be remembered.
- He also urges the other poets to create works as good as Shakespeare's so that they too do not need a hollow stone-made gravestone to be remembered.
- Milton ends the poem by saying that the words of Shakespeare live in the heart of every reader and that no king can have this kind of resting place.
