A Wedding in Brownsville Summary
Issac Bashevis Singer was well known for his surrealist technique in his writing. This short story- A Wedding In Brownsville is another perfect example of surrealism which means a dreamlike presentation of a story. The central character of the story is Dr. Solomon who is a Jew doctor.
- The central character of this story Dr. Solomon is a renowned Jew doctor who lives in America now. He had lost his whole family in the Holocaust and somehow managed to escape to America from Poland.
- He had also lost his first love Raizel back in Poland and he is now married to Gretl who is an Anti-Nazi.
- Though he is a well-known doctor and holds a prestigious position in the Jew Community in America, there is a void in her mind that never goes away. That can be reasoned by both- losing his family or the present Jew people who have somehow lost their basic Jewish Culture.
- The story continues as Dr. Solomon gets invited to a Jewish marriage ceremony in Brownsville where the daughter of Abraham Mekheles- a fellow Jew from Poland, is getting married.
- Though Dr. Solomon started to distance himself from any social events, he finally decided to attend the marriage ceremony.
- On the way to Brownsville, they had to stop their car as there was an accident on the road. Dr. Solomon thought he somehow knew the person who died in that accident.
- When he and his wife Gretl finally reached the wedding venue, he suddenly found his lost love Raizel among the crowd.
- As he did not want to lose her again he decided to marry her ignoring the fact that he is already married to Gretl.
- Suddenly Dr. Solomon realized that Raizel does not look old enough, which somehow made him wonder if it is a dream or maybe it was him who had died in that road accident and now meeting his first love in past life.
- The story ends on an ambiguous note as Abraham Mekheles leads his daughter through the aisle.
