Class 12 Chemistry Aldehydes, Ketones & Carboxylic Acid – Important Topics
Carbonyl compounds are those compounds that contain a carbon-oxygen double bond in them. Aldehydes, Ketones and Carboxylic acids are carbonyl compounds as they have C=O group in them.
- The carbon atom of the carbonyl compound is an sp²-hybridized atom. It forms 3 sigma bonds.
- The fourth valence electron remains in the p-orbital.
- Carbonyl compounds forms a Pi bond with the oxygen by overlapping with the p-orbital of the oxygen atom.
- The bond angle of the carbonyl compound is around 120 degrees.
- The carboxyl carbon bonds of the carboxylic acid lie on one plane.
- The carboxylic carbon has less electrophilic property than the carbonyl compound due to resonating structures.
