NMAT by GMAC is the first stage of the MBA admission process, but clearing the exam does not guarantee admission. After receiving their NMAT score, candidates must meet the individual B-school's cutoff and complete its selection rounds.
For NMIMS, the 2026 admission cycle included a 209 overall NMAT cutoff with 60 marks in each section for the MBA programme. Shortlisted candidates then appeared for the Competency Assessment and Personal Interview (CAPI) process, with the Competency Assessment carrying the highest weightage in the final selection.
- NMAT 2026 will be conducted from November 2 to December 20, 2026.
- Candidates can take NMAT up to three times in one testing cycle, subject to the applicable retake rules.
- NMAT scores are reported to participating B-schools selected by the candidate during the score-reporting process.
- The NMIMS MBA cutoff was 209 overall with 60 in each section in the 2026 admission cycle.
- At NMIMS, the final selection weightage included 60% Competency Assessment, 15% Personal Interview, 15% work experience and 10% NMAT score.

NMAT Selection Process 2026: Overview
NMAT by GMAC does not run a common counselling round. GMAC only conducts the test and sends your score to the B-schools you select. Every college then runs its own shortlisting and selection.
Registering for NMAT alone does not apply you to any B-school - you must also fill each college's own application form. This is the single biggest mistake students make in the NMAT cycle.
The process works in four broad stages:
- Stage 1 - Test: You register, book a slot and take NMAT in the November to December window.
- Stage 2 - Score reporting: Your official score goes to the B-schools you picked, free for the first five.
- Stage 3 - Shortlisting: Each college applies its own overall and sectional cutoff and releases a call list.
- Stage 4 - Final selection: Shortlisted students take a competency test and personal interview, and a composite merit list decides the seat.

NMAT 2026 Eligibility for the Selection Process
GMAC keeps NMAT eligibility open. The stricter filters come from the B-schools, not from the exam.
| Criteria | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Qualification | Bachelor's degree of minimum 3 years from a recognised university |
| Minimum Marks | No bar from GMAC; most B-schools ask for 50 percent in graduation |
| Final Year Students | Eligible, subject to submitting proof of graduation later |
| Age Limit | No upper age limit |
| Work Experience | Not mandatory; carries weightage in the final merit at several colleges |
| Number of Attempts | 3 in one testing cycle |
If you fall short of a college's graduation percentage rule, a high NMAT score will not save your application. Check each B-school's eligibility clause before you spend a score report on it.
How Your NMAT 2026 Score Is Calculated
NMAT is a computer-adaptive test. The questions you get depend on how you answer the earlier ones, so two students never see the same paper. This is why raw marks are converted into a scaled score.
| Section | Questions | Sectional Time | Scaled Score Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Language Skills | 36 | 28 minutes | 12 to 120 |
| Quantitative Skills | 36 | 52 minutes | 12 to 120 |
| Logical Reasoning | 36 | 40 minutes | 12 to 120 |
| Total | 108 | 120 minutes | 36 to 360 |

Points to remember about NMAT scoring:
- There is no negative marking, so you should attempt every question in a section.
- You choose the order of the three sections, but you cannot change it once you start.
- Sectional timers are strict - unused time in one section does not carry over.
- Your score is scaled by question difficulty, so a harder set answered correctly earns more.
- The score is valid for one year from your test date.
Sectional cutoffs matter as much as your total. A 250 total with 55 in Quantitative Skills can still be rejected by NMIMS if the sectional bar is 60.

NMAT 2026 Score Reporting to B-Schools
Score reporting is the step that actually connects your exam to an admission. You select the B-schools during registration, and GMAC sends your official score directly to them.
- Your registration fee of INR 3,000 plus 18 percent GST includes 5 free score reports.
- Each additional school report costs INR 400 plus taxes.
- You can add or change your school choices until the registration window closes.
- Rescheduling your exam date, time or centre costs INR 1,200 plus taxes.
Choose all 5 free score reports even if you are unsure - adding a school later costs money and can miss a deadline. Pick a mix of one reach college, three realistic ones and one safe option.

NMAT Retake Policy: Which Attempt Counts
The retake option is what makes NMAT different from CAT or XAT. You can improve your score inside the same admission season.
| Rule | Details |
|---|---|
| Maximum Attempts | 3 in one cycle (1 first attempt + 2 retakes) |
| Gap Between Valid Attempts | Minimum 15 days |
| Gap After No Show or Incomplete Test | You can reschedule after 24 hours |
| Retake Fee | Charged separately for each retake, as per the official fee schedule |
| Score Considered by Most Colleges | Your best score across attempts |
| Score Considered by NMIMS | Only your first attempt |
Plan your first attempt as your serious attempt, because NMIMS will not look at your retake score. If NMIMS is your target, book your first slot only when your mocks are already at your target level.
Take a retake when your first score is 15 to 20 points below your target college's cutoff, when one section pulled your total down, or when a technical or health issue affected your test day.

NMAT Cutoff 2026 for Shortlisting
The shortlist cutoff is the first hard filter. Every college publishes its own overall and sectional bar after the exam window closes.
| B-School | Expected NMAT 2026 Cutoff |
|---|---|
| NMIMS Mumbai (MBA Core) | 210+ |
| NMIMS Bengaluru | 210+ |
| NMIMS Hyderabad | 200+ |
| NMIMS Navi Mumbai | 209+ |
| NMIMS Indore | 190+ |
| NMIMS MBA Pharmaceutical Management | 190+ |
| XIM University, Bhubaneswar | 234+ |
| K J Somaiya Institute of Management, Mumbai | 225+ |
| TAPMI Bengaluru | 220+ |
| IFMR GSB, Chennai | 215+ |
| ISB (AMPBA) | 215+ |
| VIT Business School | 200+ |
| SOIL Institute of Management, Gurugram | 190+ |
| IBS Hyderabad | 160+ |

These are expected figures based on previous cycles and are not official announcements. A cutoff can move by 15 to 20 points in either direction depending on how many students appear and how tough the adaptive sets turn out.
Cutoffs move because of the number of test takers, the difficulty of the adaptive question pool, the number of seats in each programme and the reservation policy of the institute.

NMIMS Selection Process 2026 Through NMAT
NMIMS is the flagship NMAT college and takes the largest share of NMAT applicants. Its post-exam round is called CAPI, short for Competency Assessment and Personal Interview.
NMIMS Shortlisting Criteria
NMIMS shortlists on both your overall NMAT score and each sectional score. In the last cycle the bar was 209 overall with 60 in each of the three sections for MBA Core, MBA HR, MBA Business Analytics and MBA Digital Transformation, while MBA Pharmaceutical Management closed lower at 190 overall.
NMIMS CAPI Round Structure
| Component | What It Tests | Format |
|---|---|---|
| Competency Test | Managerial aptitude, analytical and problem-solving ability, situational judgement, communication | Online, multiple sections, objective format |
| Personal Interview | Academics, career goals, business awareness, leadership and personality | Panel of 2 to 3 faculty members, 15 to 20 minutes |
| Statement of Purpose | Clarity of goals and fit with the programme | Submitted online before the round |
NMIMS Final Weightage 2026
Your NMAT score is only one input in the final ranking. The competency test carries the heaviest weight.
| Component | Indicative Weightage |
|---|---|
| Competency Test | 50 percent |
| NMAT Score | 20 percent |
| Personal Interview | 20 percent |
| Academic Profile (Class 10, Class 12, Graduation) | 5 percent |
| Work Experience and Diversity | 5 percent |
Note: NMIMS revised its competency test pattern and component weightage for the current intake. The confirmed split is shared with your CAPI call letter, so treat the table above as indicative.
A 240 NMAT score does not guarantee a NMIMS seat, because 80 percent of your final rank is decided after the exam. Students with a 215 score and a strong CAPI performance regularly convert ahead of higher scorers.

Selection Process at Other NMAT Colleges
Every NMAT-accepting college builds its own weightage. Here is how the process differs across the top options.
| B-School | Post-Exam Rounds | Weightage Pattern |
|---|---|---|
| NMIMS (all campuses) | Competency Test + Personal Interview | Competency test heaviest, NMAT around 20 percent |
| TAPMI Manipal and Bengaluru | GD or WAT + Personal Interview | GD/WAT/PI 45 percent, entrance score 35 percent, academics 15 percent, diversity 5 percent |
| XIM University, Bhubaneswar | Personal Interview | Entrance score plus interview and profile score |
| K J Somaiya, Mumbai | Written Test + Personal Interview | Entrance score, written assessment, interview and profile |
| ISB (AMPBA and AMPM) | Application review + Interview | Profile-led; NMAT used as one of several accepted scores |
| SPJIMR (select programmes) | Profile review + Interview | Heavy profile and work experience weightage |
| VIT Business School | Personal Interview | Entrance score plus interview |
| Great Lakes, Chennai and Gurgaon | Essay + Personal Interview | Entrance score, work experience and interview |
Apply to at least four or five NMAT colleges, because a single shortlist gives you no fallback if one interview goes badly.

Documents Required for NMAT Selection Rounds
Keep scanned copies ready before the shortlist is announced. Round registration windows are usually open for less than a week.
| Document | Specification |
|---|---|
| NMAT Official Scorecard | PDF downloaded from your mba.com account |
| Class 10 Marksheet and Certificate | Scanned copy; originals at final verification |
| Class 12 Marksheet and Certificate | Scanned copy; originals at final verification |
| Graduation Marksheets (all semesters or years) | Scanned copies; provisional certificate if result awaited |
| Degree or Provisional Certificate | Required before admission is confirmed |
| Work Experience Certificate | Offer letter, relieving letter or current employment letter |
| Photo Identity Proof | Aadhaar, PAN or Passport, matching your NMAT registration name |
| Passport Size Photograph | Recent colour photo, as per the college's size specification |
| Category Certificate | SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS or PwD, in the prescribed format |
| Statement of Purpose | Written in the college's word limit and template |
Your name and date of birth must match exactly across your NMAT registration and your certificates. A mismatch can hold up your admission at the verification stage.

Final Merit List and Admission Confirmation
The merit list is published campus-wise and programme-wise, usually in April. It uses your composite score, not your NMAT score.
Follow these steps once the list is out:
- Log in to the college admission dashboard using your application ID and password.
- Check your status - selected, waitlisted or not selected - and note your waitlist number.
- Download the provisional offer letter and read the acceptance deadline carefully.
- Pay the first instalment of the admission fee within the given window.
- Upload the required documents for verification and, where asked, report to the campus with originals.
- Complete the medical and anti-ragging formalities and collect your enrolment number.
If you miss the fee payment deadline, your seat moves to the next student on the waitlist and is not restored.
Waitlist movement at NMIMS and other top NMAT colleges is usually strong in the first two weeks after the deadline, so keep tracking your number even after the first list.

How to Prepare for the Competency Test and Interview
Most students prepare hard for NMAT and then walk into the selection round unprepared. Since the post-exam round carries 70 to 80 percent weightage at NMIMS, this is where seats are won.
- Revise your fundamentals: The competency test reuses aptitude, reasoning and comprehension skills, so keep practising after the exam.
- Build business awareness: Read one business daily for the two months before your round and track major deals, policy changes and sector news.
- Know your form: Every line of your application and SOP is fair game in the interview panel.
- Prepare your why: Have clear answers for why MBA, why this college, why this specialisation and where you see yourself in five years.
- Practise situational judgement: Work through ethical dilemma and workplace scenario questions, since these appear in the competency test.
- Do mock interviews: Take at least three panel-style mocks and record them to fix filler words and body language.
Do not treat the gap between your NMAT score and the shortlist as a break. That is the window in which your competency test preparation has to happen.
