Satellite communications is a part of the telecommunications system which uses artificial satellites to transport information from one place to another place on Earth. Carrier signals used in satellite communication are Electromagnetic waves. These signals carry information such as audio, video, or any other data between ground and space and vice-versa.

  • A communications satellite is an artificial satellite that creates a communication link between a source transmitter and a receiver at different locations on Earth.

A satellite is an object (moon, planet, or machine) in space that orbits or circles around a bigger object. For example, Earth is a satellite of the sun because it orbits around it. Similarly, the moon is a satellite of Earth because it orbits around it. There are two kinds of satellites:

  • Natural Satellites: A natural satellite is an astronomical body that orbits a planet, dwarf planet, or small Solar System body. Such as the moon orbiting the Earth, 
  • Artificial Satellites: A artificial satellite is an object that is intentionally placed into orbit in outer space. Artificial Satellites have a variety of uses, such as weather forecasting, communication relay, broadcasting, navigation (GPS), and Earth observation. The world’s first artificial satellite to be launched into the Earth’s orbit was Sputnik 1 which lifted off on Oct. 4, 1957.

Types of Artificial Satellites

There are two types of artificial satellites that help in the transmission of signals and are known as Passive Satellite and Active Satellite.

A passive satellite is known to be the kind of satellite that is capable of reflecting the signal from one earth station to another, despite the need for any retransmission. Passive Satellites were amongst the earliest to surface, but with time elapsing forward, active satellites have subjugated the market.

But the communication distance between two stations is limited to 1500 km in these types of propagations. Satellite communication overcomes this limitation. Satellites are located at a certain height above the earth, so communication becomes easy between any two earth stations.
