A connector is an electronic device that connects or cuts the circuit breaker. Typically, a connector is used where it may be desirable to cut through sections at a later time: power input, peripheral connection, or boards that may need to be replaced.

  • In an electrical circuit, components are electrically connected if an electric current can flow between them.
  • The purpose of an electrical connector is to create an electrical connection between parts of an electrical circuit, or between different electrical circuits, by linking them together.
  • The connectors are made of different materials and come in a variety of shapes, sizes, quality, and complexity based on their functions.
  • Since most connectors must operate under extreme conditions, their design should include conditions such as high temperature, water, dirt, vibration, etc.

A connector is an electronic device that connects or cuts the circuit breaker. The purpose of an electrical connector is to create an electrical connection between different parts of an electrical circuit.

  • Most electrical connectors have a gender i.e. a male component and a female component.
  • The male component is called a plug and the female component is called a socket.
  • To join two dissimilar connectors, an adapter can be used.
  • The connectors are made of different materials based on their functions. They come in a variety of shapes, sizes, quality, and complexity.
  • Differentiated by their function, electrical connectors can be divided into four basic categories: inline or cable connectors, Chassis or panel connectors, PCB mount connectors, and Splice or butt connectors.

The manufactured connectors have two main components, called housing and terminals. The terminal pins are external and are used to transmit electrical signals between the two components.

  • It is usually made of materials that can run electricity.
  • The house is an outer shell or adhesive over terminal pins.
  • Its main function is to hold the end pins in place and also to protect them from short circuits and external conditions.
  • It is made of non-electrical materials, for example, molded plastic. It can also be made of protective materials such as ceramics.

There are various kinds of connectors based on the connector level, connector function, and connector termination which are listed below:

Connectors based on connector level 

  • Input / Output Connectors: Input/output (I/O) connectors are designed to attach external devices, such as printers, keyboards, and displays, to the server.
  • Wire-to-Board Connectors: These types of connectors are used to connect wires to a printed circuit board to enable communication between circuits.
  • Chip-to-Package Connectors: A chip pack connector consists of an electrically connected electrical component for contacts and a remote device; where the contacts are arranged to be connected electronically and mechanically to the circuit board.
  • Board-to-Board Connectors: This type of device is designed to provide a signal connection between printed circuit boards (PCBs).

Connector based on Connector Function 

  • Terminal Block: These connectors disconnect one wire and connect it to the circuit. We use terminal block connectors to connect wires from the same circuit without cutting wires.
  • Binding Post: Bonding connectors are widely used in the test of fixing cable cables. You can find them on loudspeakers and audio amplifiers.
  • Plug and Socket: Suitable for use in control circuits. They provide a link between the control circuit and the components.
  • Rack and Panel: These connectors are specially designed to connect any device to the device storage area. They are designed for military and commercial use and are made of the highest quality and durability.
  • Blade: It connects single wires to blade vessels using flat conductive blades. These are attached to connecting cables and are used in thermostats and speakers.
  • Ring and Spade: The connection is between the screw and a threaded post. It enables easy connections that can be removed because the lock is slightly off.

Connectors based on Connector Termination 

  • Insulation Displacement: It connects the closed wires and does not use any pre-cut insulation. When electrical insulators are installed, a series of blades cut the installation. This helps to reduce current management capacity.
  • Crimping: It creates a connection between connectors and cables that can be disconnected later. These are ideal for safety, ease of use, and cost-effectiveness.

There are many types of connectors because there are so many different types of connectors, they often have different roles. 

  • We can find connectors on all computers and laptops.
  • We all know about the Universal Serial Bus, also known as USB, which is also a common connector.

The rear flight system is used to connect multiple plug-in cards with one core to create a complete backplane system.

Ans. Keyed connectors can be connected if they are adequately aligned together. This design helps to avoid accidental damage to the terminal connectors. On the other hand, the lock connectors are pushed into a male locking plug or plug and twisted to lock the connector in place and prevent it from loosening. It is also known as twist-lock connectors, lock connectors are used in industrial and marine systems where secure communication is essential.

SFP is a short form of Small Form-factor Pluggable. Generally, SFP is considered an improved version of the GBIC module. GBIC is commonly used in fiber optic and Ethernet systems as the optical connector for high-speed networks. SFP transceivers are integrated and easily connected devices that act as a visual connectors between communication devices (switch, router, card network) and interconnecting cabling (copper or fiber). 

Ques. Define ESD Shielded Connectors and EMI filtering. (1 mark)

Ans. ESD connectors are protected from electrostatic emissions, which could damage the circuit of its components. EMI filtering is the connectors that have an additional feature installed in the housing. This feature helps the connector to protect itself from electrical interference.

Ques. Define the role of mounting in a connector. (3 marks)

Ans. The term ‘mounting’ can refer to many things: the way the connector is used (panel mount, free-hanging, board angle), whether the connector's angle is related to its attachment (straight or right angle), or how it is attached to the machine (solder tab, surface mount, through a hole). Therefore, a panel mount is a machine feature or feature built into a half-connector design. It allows the connector to be secured to a resource panel, external case, or enclosure.
