- The entire article gives relevance and uniqueness to the readers by providing reasons and illustrations.

Topic:
The following appeared as part of an article in a weekly newsmagazine:
“The country of Sacchar can best solve its current trade deficit problem by lowering the price of sugar, its primary export. Such an action would make Sacchar better able to compete for markets with other sugar-exporting countries. The sale of Sacchar’s sugar abroad would increase, and this increase would substantially reduce Sacchar’s trade deficit.”
Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinking and what alternative explanations or counterexamples might weaken the conclusion. You can also discuss what sort of evidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changes in the argument would make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion.
Sample Essay:
The author’s claim about the trade deficit problem in Sacchar, it has been stated that the best way to handle this issue is by reducing the price of sugar which is the primary export product of the country. The author has expressed that a reduction of the price would help Sacchar reappear in the market and better compete with the sugar-exporting countries. This would also increase the sale, and the trade deficit issue of Sacchar would diminish. Now, the author has completely ignored the presence of so many more facts that contribute to the trade deficit issue. The price reduction is just a single factor contributing to the trade deficit issue. Let us discuss how this argument has failed to become a strong one.
Firstly, the author has stated that Sacchar would be better able to compete with the sugar-exporting countries by reducing its price. This statement is completely devoid of a causal relationship. It is true that a reduction in the prices of sugar would throw light on that product and presumably increase the demand. Where there are a handful of producers of sugar, the price is definitely a considerable factor for the consumers. Consumers are expected to depend on the pricing of sugar. But if we consider reality, consumers take into account many factors apart from prices like taste, brand, packaging, quantity, and more. Now, if Sacchar as a brand is not at par with all these other factors then even decreasing the price will not affect its trading and also the country’s competitiveness. In fact, in most cases when consumers notice a brand decreasing the price of their products, they doubt its authenticity and product quality and eventually stop purchasing that product.
Secondly, the author has claimed that with the rise in competitiveness, the sale of Sacchar’s sugar would increase. To witness an increase in sales, it is necessary for the products to have a higher quantity of production in order to offset the decrease in price. The author has not presented any statement to support the fact about the increase in production to balance with the lowered prices. In fact, if Sacchar’s sugar has a retrograde quality, hygiene, taste, branding, and packaging, then it would actually not see a rise in its sales. As a result, there may even be a drop in sales. The argument would have been strong if the author would have considered these factors and assessed them accordingly.
Thirdly, the author has stated that with the increase in Sacchar’s sugar sales, the country’s trade deficit would be balanced. Now, the author is completely devoid of the understanding of the trade deficit, or to break it down, the difference between net imports and net export. Let us consider the fact that the sugar sale will increase, but we don’t have any idea of the export and import of other products of Sacchar. In one of the scenarios, it may happen that from the cheap sugar imports from Sacchar, a country’s cake production is rising. Now, if that country is supposedly exporting cakes to Sacchar, the percentage of consumers purchasing cakes from abroad will increase. As a result, the trade deficit of Sacchar will even rise higher because of the policy being advocated by the author’s argument.
Therefore, it is way more helpful for the author to conclude data that is being created with the help of valid credentials than focusing on vague scenarios. Lastly, to conclude, I would like to provide my views on the argument. The author’s argument is overly simplified and lacks substantiated details. The author lacks knowledge of economic principles and market forces which makes them provide weak claims.
