The Consortium of National Law Universities (Consortium of NLUs) completed CLAT 2026 seat allotment across five rounds between January and May 2026. All five rounds have been released and the central admissions process for the 2026–27 academic year is now closed. Students who accepted and froze their allotted seats are enrolled at their respective NLUs. This page documents the complete round-wise allotment schedule, how to access your allotment result on the official portal, the Freeze, Float and Exit options, the seat confirmation fee, documents required for reporting, and what options remain for students who were not allotted a seat.

Allotment Dates

CLAT Seat Allotment 2026 Dates

CLAT 2026 counselling ran across five rounds, beginning January 7, 2026, with the first provisional allotment and concluding May 20, 2026, with the final allotment. Rounds 1 to 3 were held in January and February 2026, while Rounds 4 and 5 took place in May 2026 to fill vacancies that arose after students upgraded or exited in earlier rounds. All five rounds are now complete. The table below records the confirmed round-wise schedule in chronological order, with all rounds shown as past events.

Round Allotment Result Date Acceptance / Fee Payment Window Status
Round 1 January 7, 2026 January 7 – January 15, 2026 Released
Round 2 January 22, 2026 January 22 – January 29, 2026 Released
Round 3 February 5, 2026 February 5 – February 12, 2026 Released
Round 4 May 9, 2026 May 9 – May 14, 2026 Released
Round 5 (Final) May 20, 2026 May 20 – May 25, 2026 Released

University fee payment deadlines were separate from the portal confirmation window. Students who chose Freeze in Rounds 1 to 3 paid their NLU tuition fee by April 24, 2026. Those who froze in Round 4 or Round 5 had until May 30, 2026, to pay the NLU directly. Missing these deadlines risked cancellation of the allotment by the NLU.

Accept / Freeze / Float

Accept, Freeze or Float — What to Do After Allotment

After each allotment round, students had to actively choose one of three options on the portal within the acceptance window. Inaction meant losing the allotment for that round. In Round 5 (the final round), Float was not offered — students could only choose Freeze or Exit. The table below explains each option and the scenario in which it made sense.

Option What It Means When to Choose
Freeze You permanently accept the allotted NLU and programme. No further upgrade rounds apply to you. You pay the university admission fee to the NLU and report for admission. When you are satisfied with your allotment and do not want to risk a different seat in later rounds.
Float You secure the current allotment by paying the Rs 20,000 non-refundable confirmation fee but remain in the pool for a higher-preference NLU in the next round. If a better seat opens, it replaces your current allotment automatically. When you want your current seat as a fallback but prefer a higher-ranked NLU on your preference list. Available only in Rounds 1 to 4.
Exit You withdraw entirely from the central CLAT 2026 NLU counselling. Your allotment is cancelled and you are not considered in any subsequent round. The counselling registration fee is refundable, subject to applicable deductions. When you have confirmed admission elsewhere or do not wish to join any NLU offered through this process.

Paying the Rs 20,000 seat confirmation fee was mandatory for both Freeze and Float to activate the choice. Not paying within the window caused the allotment to be treated as unclaimed, and the seat was released to the next eligible student.

Seat Acceptance Fee

CLAT Seat Acceptance Fee 2026

CLAT 2026 counselling involved two distinct fees collected at different stages. The counselling registration fee was paid when registering for counselling and was refundable on Exit. The seat confirmation fee was collected only after receiving an allotment and was non-refundable. Understanding this distinction is important for refund claims.

Fee Type Amount Applicable Category Refundable on Exit?
Counselling Registration Fee Rs 30,000 General / OBC / EWS Yes (minus applicable processing deduction)
Counselling Registration Fee Rs 20,000 SC / ST / PwD Yes (minus applicable processing deduction)
Seat Confirmation Fee Rs 20,000 All categories (on choosing Freeze or Float) No

Over and above these amounts, each NLU charges its own annual tuition and admission fee, generally between Rs 2,00,000 and Rs 3,00,000 per year, paid directly to the institution — separate from any fee paid on the counselling portal. Students should verify the exact fee structure with their allotted NLU’s accounts or admissions office.

Reporting Documents

Documents Required for Reporting

Students who froze their CLAT 2026 allotment were required to upload scanned copies of the following documents on the portal within the acceptance window and carry original copies for physical verification at their allotted NLU. All documents must be self-attested and scans must be clear, legible, and complete.

  • CLAT 2026 Admit Card
  • CLAT 2026 Scorecard / Rank Card
  • Seat Allotment Letter (downloaded from consortiumofnlus.ac.in)
  • Class 10 mark sheet and pass certificate (serves as proof of date of birth)
  • Class 12 mark sheet and pass certificate
  • Character / Conduct Certificate from the last institution attended
  • Transfer / Migration Certificate
  • Caste Certificate for SC / ST / OBC students claiming reservation (if applicable)
  • EWS Certificate for Economically Weaker Section students (if applicable)
  • PwD / SAP Certificate (if applicable)
  • Domicile or Residence Certificate (as required by the specific NLU)
  • Passport-size photographs (in the quantity specified by the allotted NLU)

Individual NLUs may ask for additional documents such as a medical fitness certificate, a gap certificate if there is a break in education, or a sworn affidavit. Students must confirm the complete and final document list with their allotted NLU’s admissions office before the reporting date to avoid delays in admission.

If No Seat Allotted

What If No Seat Is Allotted

With all five rounds of CLAT 2026 central counselling concluded as of May 2026, no further Consortium-run allotment rounds are available for this cycle. Students who were not allotted a seat across all five rounds, or who chose Exit, can consider the following paths.

  • Non-NLU law colleges accepting CLAT scores: Several private and deemed law universities accept CLAT 2026 ranks for admission outside the NLU central process. Students can apply directly to these institutions using their scorecard.
  • Stray-vacancy or spot rounds at individual NLUs: Some NLUs conducted independent rounds after the central process ended to fill remaining vacancies. After five centralised rounds, over 300 seats were reported vacant across NLUs including DBRANLU Sonepat, NLIU Bhopal, MNLU Nagpur, RMLNLU Lucknow, and MNLU Mumbai, with spot admission applications invited in June–July 2026.
  • State law university admissions: Many state law universities and bar-council-affiliated colleges run separate admission processes. Several accept CLAT scores alongside state-level law entrance test scores.
  • CLAT 2027: Students aiming to reappear can start preparing for CLAT 2027. The Consortium typically opens registration in August or September of the preceding year, with the exam held in December.
  • Counselling registration fee refund: Students who did not accept any allotment or who exited are eligible for a refund of the counselling registration fee, subject to the Consortium’s published refund timeline and any applicable processing deduction.

FAQs

CLAT Seat Allotment 2026 FAQs

Ques. How do I check my CLAT 2026 seat allotment result?

Ans. Visit consortiumofnlus.ac.in, log in with your CLAT 2026 registration number and password, and open the Seat Allotment tab in your dashboard. You can view and download allotment letters for any of the five rounds from the same portal.

Ques. How many rounds of seat allotment were conducted under CLAT 2026?

Ans. CLAT 2026 counselling had five rounds. Round 1 was released January 7, 2026, and Round 5 — the final round — was released May 20, 2026. All five rounds are complete and the central admission cycle for the 2026–27 academic year is closed.

Ques. What is the difference between Freeze and Float in CLAT 2026 counselling?

Ans. Freeze locks your current allotment permanently — no further rounds will change it and you proceed directly to paying the NLU fee and reporting. Float secures your current allotment (you pay the Rs 20,000 confirmation fee) but keeps you eligible for a higher-preference NLU in the next round. Float was available only through Round 4; in Round 5, students could only Freeze or Exit.

Ques. Is the Rs 20,000 seat confirmation fee refundable?

Ans. No. The Rs 20,000 seat confirmation fee paid when choosing Freeze or Float is non-refundable regardless of the reason. The counselling registration fee is separately refundable on Exit, subject to the Consortium’s published refund policy and any applicable processing deduction.

Ques. What documents are required for reporting to my allotted NLU?

Ans. You need your CLAT 2026 admit card and scorecard, Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets and pass certificates, the downloaded seat allotment letter, a character/conduct certificate, a transfer/migration certificate, and any applicable category, EWS, PwD, or domicile certificates. Check directly with your NLU’s admissions office for any additional requirements like a medical certificate or gap certificate.

Ques. What happens if I miss the acceptance deadline after receiving an allotment?

Ans. If you did not choose Freeze or Float and pay the Rs 20,000 confirmation fee within the acceptance window, your allotment for that round was automatically cancelled. Your seat was released to the next eligible student. You could still be considered in subsequent rounds if you had not previously exited from counselling.

Ques. I was not allotted any seat across all five CLAT 2026 rounds. What options do I have?

Ans. Since all five central counselling rounds are complete, no further Consortium-run rounds are available for CLAT 2026. You can apply to non-NLU law institutions that accept CLAT scores, check individual NLU websites for stray-vacancy or spot rounds (most held in June–July 2026), explore state law university admissions, or prepare for CLAT 2027. Your counselling registration fee is refundable as no seat was accepted.

Ques. What is the NLU admission fee and when is it paid?

Ans. The annual tuition and admission fee varies by NLU and typically ranges between Rs 2,00,000 and Rs 3,00,000 per year. It is paid directly to the allotted NLU — not on the counselling portal. Students who froze in Rounds 1 to 3 had a deadline of April 24, 2026; those who froze in Rounds 4 or 5 had until May 30, 2026. This fee is entirely separate from the Rs 20,000 confirmation fee paid during counselling.
