Synthesis of Hypoiodous Acid

[Click Here for Sample Questions]

HIO Acid is highly unstable & it’s weak in comparison to other acids. It can be easily obtained via the treatment of mercury oxide with iodine. HIO can also form unstable salts in a solution when iodine reacts with alkali.

  • The synthesis of Hypoiodous Acid occurs when iodine reacts with a cold & dilute solution of sodium hydroxide.
  • After that, it results in sodium hypoiodite & then hydrolyses to form the chemical compound Hypoiodous Acid.

Methods of Synthesis of Hypoiodous Acid

The various methods are as follows:

  • The following equation will make you understand the occurrence of HOI.

2NaOH + I2 -> NaIO + NaI + H2 ………(1)

So, the above equation shows that the interactions take place between sodium hydroxide & iodine respectively. The reaction results in the formation of sodium hypoiodite, sodium iodide & also water.

  • Here is the second equation that depicts the breakdown of the components compiled.

NaIO + H2O -> NaOH + HIO …….(2)

With the above equation, it can be said that the interaction between sodium hypoiodite & iodine forms sodium hydroxide & Hypoiodous Acid.

  • The third equation depicts the formation of iodine & Hypoiodous Acid.

I2 + H 2O -> HIO + I - + H +

So with the equation, it is clear that iodine gets dissolved in water and it generated HIO and iodide. The interactions between HIO atoms or molecules result in iodous acid iodide.

  • These are some equations for the same :

2 HIO -> HIO + I + H +

HIO2 HIO -> IO- 3 + I - + 2 H +.

2 HIO 2 -> IO - 3 + HIO + H +

  • Hence, the Acidic Component also get dissolves in water to form hypoiodite. The equation is as follows-

HIO -> IO - + H +

Sample Questions

Ques. Which type of Acid is Hypoiodite? (2 marks)

Ans. The Hypoiodous Acid is weaker in comparison to other acids in the chemical world. Hypoiodite has a pKa of around 10.5. & the conjugate base of Hypoiodite is (IO-). Hypoiodite is a highly unstable compound as it occurs in a highly unstable state. It is an inorganic compound also. Hypoiodite is weaker than acids like sulphuric acid or nitric acid.

Ques. What is the use of Chemical Compound HOI? (2 marks)

Ans. These are the uses of the Chemical Compound HOI;

  • It is used as a strong oxidizing agent which is useful in making rocket fuels.
  • It is used as an active agent in the destruction of microbial & the major iodine compound is used for sanitizing iodophors & alcohol iodine solutions.
  • It is also used as an atmospheric sampler to explain the abnormally high organic fractions that are reportedly found by the investigators.
  • It is used as a source of ‘OH radicals.

Ques. What is the difference between a strong and weak acid? (2 marks)

Ans. The basic difference between a strong acid & a weak acid is that a strong acid ionizes completely in an aqueous solution whereas a weak acid ionizes partially in a solution. A strong acid passes more current conversely a weak acid pass less current. A strong acid has a higher conductivity whereas a weak acid has a lower conductivity. A strong acid has a faster rate of reaction but a weak acid has a slower rate of reaction.

Ques. Define Strong Acid? (2 marks)

Ans. A strong acid ionizes completely in a solution. It reacts very fast with any solution. Strong acids have a strong conductivity. A strong acid has a lower pH. A strong acid has a quite low value of pKa. It possesses a very high concentration of H++ ions. A strong acid has a higher conductivity.

Examples: Hydrochloric Acids, Sulfuric Acids, perchloric acids, nitric acids, Chloric acids, Hydrobromic acids, etc.

Ques. Write the name of 7 weak acids? (3 marks)

Ans. A weak acid is that acid that can not be ionized completely in an antique solution. It only ionizes partially in a solution.

These are the names of 7 weak acids;

  • Acetic acid (CH3COOH)
  • Sulfurous acid (H2SO3)
  • Phosphoric acid (H3PO4)
  • Formic acid (HCOOH)
  • Benzoic acid ( C6H5COOH)
  • Hydrofluoric acid (HF)
  • Nitrous acid (HNO2)

Ques. Describe the situation when the pH of Hypoiodous acid is over 8? (2 marks)

Ans. The normal pH range in Hypoiodous Acid is 8-9. When the pH is over 8 then the Hypoiodous acid becomes unstable & as the result, it is unable to form a hypoiodite ion. Hence, the decomposition of hypoiodite ion takes place & then it results in the formation of iodine and iodate.

Ques. How does a Hypoiodite reagent is prepared? (2 marks)

Ans. A Hypoiodite is an unstable ion that has high conductivity. It breaks down rapidly towards iodide & iodate. A reagent can only be prepared when the iodine reacts towards a base agent. It is only possible in this case. So the iodine must react with a base agent. The molecular formula of hypoiodite is IO-.

Ques. Describe the structure of Hypoiodous Acid? (3 marks)

Ans. The structure of hypoiodous acid is formed by the bonding of hydroxide and iodine ions.It is created when there is an uneven distribution of electrons among the atoms in a molecule.

  • Since oxygen and iodine are electronegative elements, electrons are drawn to them.
  • When the charge is separated from the atoms, then, it results in the bending of the structure of Hypoiodous Acid.
  • The molecules are joined by covalent bonds made up of negatively charged oxygen atoms.
